January Hunt/Search Coil Analysis

Dan, I was wondering if you thought the smaller coil might have helped you get some results just because of the size? Since the coil is smaller, it takes more and tighter swings to get good coverage. I know this has been my experience with smaller coils, is that it slows me down a lot.

Dave (Mr. Stuff) and I are still wondering if that big coil of yours will give any advantage at one school site we have hunted where everything is d-e-e-p. We're both getting good hits on the deep stuff, and we're digging it... but at those depths we wonder if there might be more that we are not getting. A dime can be a darn small target when it's deep. We'll have to get together over there on a nice spring weekend and see what we can turn up. I think it's a great test site for the larger coil.

Nick, that small coil did slow me down. I did my best to overlap each swing of the coil but many times I did walk too fast and get sloppy. I don't know if I found those dimes merely because I hunted slower or because the coil was smaller. Most likely both were factors. I think the smaller field of detection may also be a factor because less junk targets are interrupting the electromagnetic field under the coil. With a larger coil there would be more junk interfering with the good signal. Does that make sense? I'm no expert.

It would be interesting to see what the 15x12 coil would do at that school site. I've seen NiagracountyNY get some very deep coins with his HUGE 18x15 sef butterfly coil. You might want to watch some of his videos.
