Hi guy's I'm looking at buying a new Etrac. I know they are great on coins in the park just wondering how they go on small jewelry ect?
thanks for any info

cheers Ron

Ron,

I don't have much experience in the small jewelry class. Southwind (here on the forums) has some testing and posted some ideas, here and on another forum. The E-Trac is sensitive to small items, but I think the language takes more study. Coins are fairly simple to hear, and I think that "LULLS" us into a "don't dig the 12-04's, 12-06's, 12-08's" numbers where small gold items would fall (though it does pick them up real well). I have dug a number of rings and sure didn't have any trouble hearing them.

Hi mesha,
I have dug a number of small gold rings and just the other day brought up a very thin gold bracelet from 9 inches down. ( i should show pic, its probably 1/16 of an inch or thinner) I was quite surprised to see the bracelet as I was told that the minelab had a hard time with thin gold, or gold chains. The numbers were solid the tone was solid and even though I did not recognize the number I dug it because I knew I was in a spot that might have gold jewelry and that the numbers for it hit in the lower number range. Most the smaller rings come up in the lower range of 12 ( 5-20) but if I get a 10-8 or a 14 8 or any solid number in the lower quadrant and am in that same hunting area then I will dig it because gold shows up in so many different forms and compositions and there it is easy to dig. The deep items don't always come in like the shallow items do as the numbers can change because of the depth.
That is why like NEB Say's above that lots of us are lulled into thinking that the junk will hit in this range because its not a silver high conductor so we ignore it. But if you put yourself in the right area that you know has rings and gold then you will want to focus on the lower numbers. The last mid size gold 18k ring i found was defiantly a 12 21 and only 4 inches down on a hill side in weeds. I had found lots of tabs there at the same number but I check them as we have found rings in that spot as well. The pull tabs are similar and most target just above the nickle 12-15 to 12 21 even though I dig lots of tabs looking for gold the gold has a very solid id and sound and I want to check all that kind of target that hits like that. One more thing, If I am on a nice lawn there is NO way I would check all those low tones as most of them are NOT rings. I only check and dig like that where It's appropriate and easy.
Put yourself in the right area first then focus on the ids of small gold.

good luck

The rings that I have found had a good solid sound in the lower range of the conductive scale(along with pull tabs ETC.). Not true for me with small gold bracelets and necklaces. The ones that I have dug are scratchy and all over the place.

Yes. When I say low tones I mean low on the 12 scale. Most gold rings I have dug come in on the left of the E trac 12 line that is what I mean by low side. Not in the Iron area which is bottom half of screen.

Hope that clears up what i think I thought I said.

I thought I would respond to this, as I just found a smaller piece of silver jewelry with my etrac, using a 12 X 15 SEF coil. The item was 3 inches down, and took me forever to find it. I was surprised that the machine found it with the massive coil, given it's size. I have also found several small rings with the machine, using stock coil and the SEF.

I am no expert but will share with you what I have learned...
I have found with minelab TID machines that the higher the carat value of the gold = the higher the reading.
eg. 9k may 12.06 but 18k may 12.16 and 22 k may be 12.28 (these are just examples and may not be true figures.)
Also , obviously the size of the object may affect TID no's
The standard pro coil seems quite sensitive and being DD seperates lttle desirable metal objects fairly well from the other stuff in the ground
I picked up a tiny (4mm) piece of copper from 6" deep the other day

The E-Trac does great on small gold. You don't see as much gold being found by E-Trac users ONLY because most are looking for deep old coins, and that is why they bought the E-Trac. I do quite a bit gold hunting in tot lots, schools and parks and the E-Trac does it just as good as any other. I also have the V3i, DFX and MXT and the E-Trac is as good on gold as any of them.

Thanks Southwind that's the kind of thing I needed to hear I have a MXT and a Excal II. Both are great detectors and I wouldn't get rid of either of them! My problem is I'm going to the UK and the minster of internal affairs will only let me bring one detector so this seems like a good excuse to buy a detector (Etrac) I just need to convince myself it will do well on small gold ect!

thanks again Ronnie
