Just getting started

MrGee

New member
My local hobby shop is expecting their 'spring order' of metal detetors, and the afternoon that they arrive i will rush into town and pick up my Garrett 250. I've been following this forum for a while now and looking at other forums, watching the many videos that are out there about metal detecting and zeroed in on the 250 within a couple of hours and nothing that I've read or heard has made me reconsider. So...........I will be picking up my new detector any day now, even though here in Wisconsin we still have about 12 inches of snow and probably 10 inches of frost below that, I'm anxious to get my hands on one. Just to confess by enourmous ignorance, I've never owned one before but I always wanted one. Since I got fired from my part time job a while back, I thought it must be time to make the leap. I mean, I've got all this time now....

I wish I could afford to buy the pin pointer too, but that will have to wait until I find my first cache of gold coins...Ok, ok, so that might not come right away. I'll settle for that diamond ring then . I can't wait for spring to get here as I have my first project all mapped out....my yard. I downloaded a plat map from 1889 and to my surprise, i found that there was a house on my lot as early as that. Now, where was that old well? How about that outhouse....?

Anyhow, keep up all the great advice and pointers that you guys regularly post. One last thought before I go - I'm really jealous of you sothern boys who can go out on New Years day. I'm also jealous of you New Englanders who find all the Colonial relics, and I'm jealous of the guys from the South East who detect all those Civil War Relics and I;m jealous...................

welcome to forum Mrgee ,, hope you get out on your first hunt real soon

Since the pinpointer is on hold for awhile, and the 250 demands a slight learning curve to operate and utilize it's pinpointing capabilities now is the time to rig yourself up a probe.
I have been swinging a 250 since they first came out and after finding a target I always grab my probe first. A long bladed and skinny screwdriver (yes it will scratch a coin) is inserted into the ground until contact is made. You may have some rocky ground in your area thanks to the ice age glaciers shoving rock around but for shallow coins a probe really makes short work in finding a coin. Smaller holes needed too when you know exactly were the target lays.
Learn how to detune your coil and you will be up and running when the mosquitos show up.

Welcome aboard. We'll be looking forward to your success and pics of your finds. Hard telling what you may find on your property and it's a good place to start and practice. The 250 is a great little tector but take your time learning it.

Its nice of you to support your local store, even though you
could still get a deal through KellyCo.....of course your local shop might do you well too.
I wish more people supported their local stores. With WalMart destroying so many smaller communities
by coming in and undercutting everyone, the little guy doesn't have a chance.

Have fun, it's a life style! once in your blood, you will always be a treasurer hunter. Look for old swimming areas, at rivers, lakes, ect. know your detecting laws in your state! :detecting:

Yup. That's why I went to the trouble of scouting out a 'local' dealer. I'd rather buy it in my Little town, but the only people who sell metal detectors in town here is - you guessed it - Wally World. (and I don't believe that they sell Garrett) So I will drive 20 miles to the city and still consider it local. they told me on the phone that they ordered them last week and they usually come in within a day or two, so maybe Monday I'll actually be able to touch it!! God! I am so ready for spring. Of course I noticed that there is a lot of that going around on this forum lately. I think most everyone on here has the same itch. But poor me. It's only February and Ive got a long way to go. I remember freezing my butt off every ST Patrick's day watching the big parade and THAT'
S still a month away.

Take care everyone and hunt em when you can.
