Just Had a Very Eye-Opening Experience With My Explorer II...Long, But Worth The Read.

It's underground. It's a good size one and it may be metallic vice EMI...I just know it's affecting the machines, for sure.

>>> Nice post, but you should have kept the SECRET  <<<

Heh...yeah, that thought DID occur to me. But as we know, there are many other factors as well and if we ALL know the secret, I think we all also have a few other tricks up our sleeves. Many sweep too fast, many fail to get "in character" and envision their hunt sites as they might have been 50, 100, or 150 years ago. Many don't use the threshold properly...you know, all that. But the real bottom line is I was so darn excited I had to tell SOMEBODY, and the wife was somehow unimpressed by it...go figure!

Hey Don, I hear you on that rough ground. You have that nasty orange soil full of iron, don't you? Like what I encountered when Chris from Ohio and I met out in Danville and did some hunting on an old plantation site there. Oh my God, was that some bad stuff. I didn't have my Explorer II at the time but did have the Quattro and the CZ-70 and the CZ was having a tough time as was the Quattro. And of course I was running the Quattro too high as well...wish I had made that realization then.

So I can imagine after my recent experience that you definitely WOULD benefit from running it down on the Explorer where you are. Where do you find that you generally have to run your sens to get your best performance in that ground?

Because mine looks through my pouch when I bring it in like she's looking under the Christmas tree for her present or something
Every time I think she's getting an attitude about my hunting so much I remind her about that LARGE jewelry box she has and what's inside it. Like she needs to be reminded, yeah right.
That doesn't count the MANY rings, broaches, pennants, earrings, toe rings, and bracelets that I've found over the years that she has managed to give away to friends and family.
And take my word for it, when her teenage niece comes to visit, they have a field day going through the goodies. It's really kind of funny to watch.
I don't get to much grief over my hunt time for the most part.
H.H.
Mike

Oh yeah...for sure...she's "down" with the beach thing. But when it comes to chunks of lead, wheat pennies, and a silver dime or what have you, she could care less. Not interested in detecting or digging either..."just bring me the goodies". Honestly, I don't know why I keep her. Oh...nevermind...I just remembered!

I been telling people about the same thing about the Sov for years.......and nobody listens...as far as I know.

I peak the sensitivity for best target response, then will turn it down if conditions require it.

There are places so quiet that I can run sensitivity at max without a hint of a null or false, but I know that to do so is going to cost me a lot of depth, and I will pass up targets that sound bad when sensitivity is too high.

You may just find that the Quattro and Xcal work the same way.
HH

I always assumed that if you can run a clean threshold you're OK with the sens cranked up. For the Excal, I usually run it at 11 O'clock. I've done extremely well with it that way, finding plenty of gold and deep coins at the beach. But unless it got squirrelly on me I never tried lower. It sure can help the Explorer though.

Unless you know for a fact that 11 o'clock is the hottest setting on your xcal, you might want to try what I suggested.
HH

The hottest for me around here is usually 10 but I run it at 11 most of the time. Sometimes, in the water, I may back it to 12. I'll definitely be playing with it once I get back out there, closer to the season. Our beaches are DEAD right now...sanded in and no good targets being pulled.

Why is it that some wives complain when we want to go detecting? Don't they know we have a job to do and if we didn't do it then someone else would!! Some wives would just as soon be happier if we did get out of the house and not bother them.........:) HH.

Mike...sorry for the late reply...I just got back on here.

Yes, this area is the orange and red clay soil full of iron..it is very nasty for a machine to operate properly. I have had a hard time figuring out the right combo of settings to get the exp. to work around here...I have more than once wanted to wrap it around a tree...lol The real solution though is turning the sens. down till the threshold becomes somewhat stable..it took me awhile to figure that out... as like most people think, the higher the sens the deeper it will dig....it doesn't work that way around here. In some of my worst areas I have found that I end up with the sens around 10 or 12 and sometimes 8..but it will still dig deeper than any of the Whites that I've used over the years...lol Not all the areas I hunt are that bad but alot are...I know of a campsite where the soil is a bright reddish color and it is soo bad that to this date there is not a detector made that can balance that ground....when you get the coil within 4 inches of the ground it just blares wide open...you can twist the knobs off of a manual ground balance machine to no avail...I have a friend that hunts with a Fisher and he told me there was no such ground that his detector couldn't hunt. I took him there one day and his machine couldn't pick up a bullet on top of the ground...if they ever come out with a machine that can balance that soil...I will have a virgin camp to dig....lol

Thanks Mike, maybe you answered my question. I just logged on for some info. when I read your post. I got permission to hunt at an old mill from the 1700's. I've been trying Charles' setup and also
mike M.'s setup. You said it best, it sounds like a carnival. I don't know where to begin to dig. It has a high iron content and is also next to a stream. It really took my confidence away

What coil did you use to discover this? Used more than one coil under this setting?

Thanks,
Stoopstroop
