Lake Michigan beach hunt with the G2

Today was the last chance for a few days for some 'decent' enough weather to head over to Lake Michigan and try out the G2 on the beaches. The temp was 40 deg F with a light breeze but it is going to get worse (snow) before it gets better so off I went.

Starting off in all metal with the sensitivity set at 90 the G2 settled into a fairly steady threshold at a setting of 9. Ground grab came in at 75 but due to some cold(?)rocks that were giving a signal I raised it to 86 which quieted all but a couple that I encountered. Hot rocks were few today and not a problem just a couple surface ones to kick out of the way. Running parallel to the waterline the sand was firm and 8-10" deep over a bed of gravel and rock to fist size and larger. Digging in the rocks was a slow process even with the pointed shovel I had along just for that purpose. Without exception all targets came from down in the rocks at a depth of around 12", some deeper. It's impossible to give accurate depths digging in those conditions.

The all metal response at the settings I used was easily discernible on all targets found and if I had chosen to dig more fluctuations in the threshold I'm sure even deeper targets would have come to light. Since all metal is much deeper than Disc the time to scrape away enough sand for the target ID to kick in and identify the iron became a chore. After an hour or so of scraping digging during which several coins and tabs were found I decided to save some time on the digging end so as to cover more ground. During the ID'ing process on all metal signals I found a fair number were giving a discernable tick when switching to Disc with a couple even showing some ID. So my plan was to use disc mode set at 0 and check out the 'ticks' using a quick scrape of the sand to get close enough for an ID thus saving some time. Well I didn't go more than a few feet before my next signal which after a scrape or two came in at 68-70 on the ID meter. From down in the gravels a few inches out popped my first gold with the G2!

All in all a fun time and believe me with all that digging the heavy coat I wore to fight the 40 deg temp soon came off! :hot:

Thanks for the post. It's getting cold down here in TN. also but nothing like where you're at. Sounds like the G-2 is going to do very well. EMI drives T-2s and F-75s crazy down here unless you are in the woods but the G-2 seems much more able to adapt . Thanks again. HH :minelab::teknetics::garrett::whites::tesoro:

Did you have chatter to cause you to use a Gain of '90'? I usually have had the G2 at the maximum of '99' almost everywhere, in town or out. My beach hunt was somewhat brief as I had some appointment delays, but I mostly ran at '99' but did drop to

Because I was running the low threshold, sensitivity at 90 gave a "smooth enough" threshold to allow signals to break thru. Even at that changes in the ground matrix (possibly due to the underlying rocks?) were causing some minor threshold fluctuations. I did work it for a while at higher sensitivity with a threshold setting of 12 or so to cover up some of the fluctuations but on the whole 90 was working good and on the size targets being found I doubt the difference between 90 and 100 in sensitivity would affect the depth capability to any extent. There were no small low conductors in the area of the beach I was working. The 2 days of high winds and the resultant high surf last week had cleared the lighter stuff out.

During the checking of all-metal targets and for the period I hunted in disc mode, yes the sensitivity was at 100.

Tom I tried those settings yesterday on my goldbug and found it quite pleasent to hunt with

Thanks for your insight

On the beach and in uncluttered areas 0 disc is easy to use and offers a lot of info. While not quite as deep as all metal, it ignores more of the deep rust scale and rusty nails that all metal signals on which takes up a lot of time ID'ing. Wish it ID'd deep iron as good as the Omega, I wil say that for a prospecting unit it does very good in comparison to others I have used.
