This was found in the area of and old fort in Montana (1867-1891) which had the 13th Infantry Regiment housed there. It is brass faced with a lead back it appears. I couldn't info on the internet about it.
Also dug up a few civil war era buttons,
One was a horse and plow with cabin from the U.S. Department of Indians.
 
Think that went on the kepi hat. Nice find
 
That's an awesome find! And Cajuncoinhunter, you sir, really know your stuff about Civil War relics. Very cool for sure.
