Large coil performances.

To those who use 12" and larger coils, have you been able to notice any real depth gains using the larger than stock coils on land. I'm not talking about the beach hunters, just land users. Thanks

I have used the 15" on my XLT..Did not notice any real depth gain, And even noticed I wasn't digging small targets..Just bigger junk items..It did however make short work of the fields I hunted.
It would not be my choice for coin hunting. Relics I suspect would be found at great depths. I dug a couple pieces of Iron at 18" -Iron was about 6 inch diameter size. Yje coil I used and still have was Jimmy Sierra Magnum....I have not tried the newer 12 coils. They may be great. I know this is the Minelab forum, but you asked about large coils and didn't specify a brand of detector.
I use a XS but with standard coil only.

I never posted here before most of the time I just read..
I have a EXII and I relic hunt. Im not the most experienced person but I used the stock 10.5 and was finding many objects up to 15 inched. The field was very clean from trash and interference. I bought a 16.5 inch coil and 2 things I noticed. By this time the field which was hunting was already harvested corn and they do not disk the field they just bush hog it and let it decompose. It left a mess of the ground so the coil it about the ground by 3 to 6 inches. With the stock coil I have only found items at 6 to 8 inches, but with the 16.5 I have found with the coil in the air a medium size shell fragments up to 15 inches. I did find areas where there was no clutter on the ground so I could get the coil on the surface and I was having signals upwards of 2 feet (large shell fragments at that depth). I was using the gain at 3 so there was no over amplified signal and they were coming in extremely loud and clear with no fluttering across the screen. I passed many signals that I will be checking later.
I have seen a dramatic increase of deep finds but you will need a good pinpoint as this is the downside of the larger coil. Its harder to pin it down. The weight also is a bit heavier so it slows you down a bit. If you relic hunt and the area is open I would recommend it. Cant say to much on coinshooting as I have not truly tried it yet.

Good post for info between the 10.5 and 16.5 coils for the type of hunt you do, under the field situation you described.
Interesting - HH

Put the WOT and X-12 to a good work out the last two years and they failed to perform even as well as the stock 10.5" coil.
Tried them in lots of sites but not much to show for it. Sold them both this year and won't need them again around here. Maybe there will be a better one come out some day....

I cannot attest that this will work for me anywhere else as I said the ground is free of interference and trash. This was not only fun for me but has been a valuable tool for me in understanding how to use my machine and how to maximize all of its settings. This year I plan on expanding my searches to old pre civil war houses that I already have permission to investigate as well as getting back to this field when the ground is not so cluttered up so I can put the coil on the ground to really dig the limits. Hopefully this year we will have a little rain out here as the ground is so hard you can only go about 6 inches before you give up.

Yes, I think I get more depth, or because I expect more depth I check every signal closer for repeat ability.

I used a 12" coil the last month or so of last years hunting season here in the cold north and liked it. The way I look at it is the ground I hunt needs to be hunted with the stock and 12" coil both in dry and wet conditions, all four conditions are different and produce what was missed. I will say that I do dig more broken signals with the 12" just in case it is a coin, coin shooting in the dirt is what I do %99 of the time.
