Large Coil Question

How important is it to have the large coil? How much more depth do you get with the large coil. I know that the main advantage of the large coil is coverage but I am trying to figure out if the depth advantage is worth the cost. Thanks in advance for your input. HH -Marc

Not a lot of extra depth just a couple of inches.

But for some reason many who have purchased the large coil keep using them in preference to the stock coil.

The problem is the balance is not so good.

Many are now using a little adaptor to move the centre of gravity forward by a couple of inches. :cheers:Jerry.

Thanks Jerry, I really can't decide if ordering the larger coil would be worth it or not. I guess I will pound a few sites with the stock coil, then go over them with the E-Trac and see how many deeper targets I pick up. If I end up finding that I missed a lot of deep targets, it would probably be worth it, if not, then not so much. I guess I will just have to see how deep the stock coil really goes when I get it. Thanks for your reply. HH -Marc

Thanks Bart. I decided to use the detector stock for a while and see before I look into the bigger coil. Had a couple people advise against it so far. I will just use my E-Trac for the deeper stuff and use the Deus for a quick sweep of the surface/shallow targets when sites are messy. Thank you for all your help. HH -Marc

I'm sure the larger coil will do what others do. But let me say this with great certainty. Deep signals have there own sound that will change depending on program selected. I've dug some very deep targets and most are small. Master the audio and you may never need a large coil. Best regards

The big advantage is the ground coverage as compared to the stock coil but as with most DD coils, increasing size does not increase detection depth as much as you would see on a concentric coil increasing the size.

I would have to disagree with Bart's statement that you loose seperation - clearly that would not be the coil for high trash as no large coil is intended for that application but I have used the large coil in some Civil War camp sites and pulled lead and brass from amongst nails and other iron with no problem - easily seperating the good targets from the junk.

Pinpointing was a bit harder in the Pinpoint mode but wiggling and pulling it back or pushing it forward until the sound drops off followed by a Garrett ProPointer once the hole was opened worked just fine.

Hope this helps

Thanks Andy, It looks like I will hold off on getting the larger coil. I have not found a single person to convince me that the larger coil is worth it. I am the first to jump on something when it is worth it but I simply can't find anything that shows that this coil has a better return than the stock coil. I move low and slow, so the better coverage is not a selling point to me. If I was to get a great deal on one, I would test it, for testings' sake, but at this point, I would not purchase one at list price given the feedback I have received. Thanks for everyone's replies and thank you Andy for your input. I would like to compare the coils, just for fun, but I don't have any dealers near me and I am certainly not willing to buy-to-try. If someone has one for me to borrow, run some tests against stock and other detectors, I promise to have it back to you STAT. If someone out there is willing to do this, I would greatly appreciate it. HH and Best Regards, Marc

PM me your address Marc, I'll send you one to play with.

The large coil is deeper in my tests. Not by a lot but an extra inch at some sites can make a huge difference in the amount of older coins in your pouch at the end of the day.I am thinking once a person masters the Deus the larger coil will be a great asset but not a must have at first for general coin shooting.

The extra coverage can be very important when hunting low and slow as it will allow you to cover much more area per hour and still maintain superb seperation because of this machines blazing fast usuable speed.

I have been very impressed with just how stable the Deus is with the sensitivity nearly maxed out, even with the large coil.At some of the same sites several of the other high end single frequency machines were quite chattery and unstable when above 3/4 throttle.

I am thinking you will like the large coil when you get a chance to try one out.It is also great for those more open relic sites and still hits tiny little lead and copper/brass targets in heavy nails with authority.
A good sensitive pinpointer is a must for quickly locating some of the tiny little targets....

Larry, that was really neat for you to do that.

Larry has been extremely generous and is sending me the big coil to test. I will test it next week (hopefully I can get out) and will make a video and provide a writeup with my findings. Thank you again Larry, you truly are too generous. HH Everyone -Marc

Remember that if you get the big coil, you have two detectors. I got an extra upper unit and I use one with headphones and my wife uses the other with the control box.
