Last 3 outings gets me some Silver, Wheats, and a few Misc.

Well....Here we are once again with another posting of some finds I was able to recover on 3 separate outings. The only time to be able to cope with the temp's is around 11:00am to 3:00pm each day since it is too cold to even think about hunting in the mornings and the temp's start to drop it seems around 3:00pm so the hunts have been real short. This might just be the last post of the year for finds since the weather has been in the 30's during the day and the 20's at night and I am sure the ground is getting hard since I haven't checked in a few days  but we can all pray for some nicer Temp's one more time can't we. Let's get started!

The 1st outing didn't score me much of anything since the Wind was blowing and it seemed that every site I wanted to detect at, either had unwanted people around, too Windy, or 2" of Snow on the ground....so I stopped where a Church once was by a town that no longer exists....except for some abandoned Houses with the yards grown up thick in saplings and weeds. Tim and I had previously stopped here at this spot about a year ago and we did find a few Keepers....one being a 24-d Wheatie that I got from this site. There is a Cemetery here also and the yard is big so I know that there is still some finds yet to be made when I get another chance at detecting it, mainly in the Spring. Anyways, the wind was blowing just enough to chill a person to the bones along with temp's between the higher 20's-lower 30's. I got out and got the gear on and started hunting. I was only here for about a half hour but I did find a piece of Silver and a Wheatie. I was detecting along a set of Newer Evergreen Tree's when I got a High Tone. I backed up and looked at the meter and it was dancing from 28 t0 30 in Digital. I then looked at the Depth and it showed about 8" or so. I dug a plug and finally around the 8" mark, I seen Silver come popping out of the hole. I picked it up and it was a Canadian Dime dated 1931 in fairly nice shape. I covered the hole after a quick check with the probe to make sure there wasn't any other Keepers, and moved on. I tried to concentrate on detecting but the wind was just too much and it was freezing up my fingers, even with 2 pair of Brown Jersey Gloves on so I headed back to the vehicle. On the way back, I got a Wheatie. I got into the vehicle and thought to myself, "there will be better days than this" and headed back home with only 2 Keepers for my efforts.

The next day, I got the gear ready and thought about going up north to a Park or Fairgrounds but then did a detour on that idea. I got into Fargo and decided to go check out Lindenwood Park. I know of an area here that holds Silver but is too busy with people during the warmer months to even get close to it, so I thought maybe this would be the perfect time to go give it a try. I got to the Park and noticed a Sign that said Park Closed and the gates were across the road and locked. I sat there thinking about what I should do. I noticed a Pick-up go around the gate and could here some Construction going on back in the direction of the Park. I figured that I would have to walk in about 1/4 of a mile just to get to the spot I wanted to detect at. I then decided to just stick with the original plan and go up north. As I was driving, I then said to heck with it, I'll walk in if I have too. So I turned the Van around after about 8 blocks of driving and returned back to the entrance of the Park. I got the gear and headed into the Park. There was a light coating of Snow on the ground which I really didn't like seeing because I knew just how messy it was about to get digging in the dirt and having the Snow melt when digging. The Plugs and everything turned out just like I wanted them without any mud on the grass but that didn't mean the me or the detector would stay like this. I started walking towards the area I had in mind and would occasionally stop to pick up some Clad. I got to the spot and when I did, I got a SCREAMER of a Signal. I looked at the meter and it read 28 and the Depth was only about 3". I kept going over the Target wondering what could be making such a High Pitched Signal. The Signal Tone was higher than a regular Clad Dime Tone so I initially thought maybe a Clad Quarter. I dug down and on the bottom of the Plug was a Silver Rosie. I then sat wondering how the heck that was still there and it was only about 3" Deep. I covered the hole and started hunting again. Just a few feet from this Plug, another Target at about the same Depth. Dug it and another Silver Rosie. I couldn't believe my luck since this Park is hard to get anything Old but I guess the Silver God's were with me on this day. I worked this area and within about 20 minutes, I had recovered 6 Silver Rosie's and a Silver Quarter. NO WHEATS to think of! Now the question was, "Where are all the Wheats?". I kept hunting and finally found a Wheatie about 30' away from where I got the Silver at. As I was detecting, I noticed vehicles driving through the Park now so I decided to detect my way back to the Van and drive it down to where I was. As I got about 1/4th of the way there, I got a Deep Target that read 27 to 28 and showed a good 10". I dug down and a Mercury Dime showed itself. I then found another Wheatie and decided to go get the vehicle and continue my hunt. After running down to McDonald's for some much needed food, I came back and sat eating wondering just where to start hunting again after I got done. I decided to start working around the area where I had dug all the Silver previously and started to make my way back to where the Merc was found. I told myself that I wasn't leaving the Park until I got 10 Silver and I had to work about 30-45 minutes to accomplish this. I got into the area and ran across another Deep Target that read the same as the Merc did. I dug a Plug and another Merc showed itself. The date on this one was 1927. After that the temperature started to drop and it was starting to get dark out. I decided to pack it up for the day since I really didn't want to get locked into the Park overnight and figured on returning the next day. I also got 1 more Wheatie before I left. I still can't believe that really happened at that Park!

The next day, I woke up and looked at the Detector, my Digger, and my Carhart Jacket. The side of the Jacket was full of dried mud and the Digger was completely covered with the same. The Detector had about a 1/4" of dried mud on the handle and the Probe was caked with it also. The entire unit was a disaster so I took some time in the morning and cleaned up everything so it looked decent once more. When I finished, it was about 10:00am so I packed up the vehicle once more and headed back to Lindenwood. I noticed that there was a lite breeze when loading up the vehicle and didn't think much of it at the time. As I drove into Fargo, there was Snow Flurries. There wasn't suppose to be any Snow in the forecast for the day and it didn't look like it was going to stop anytime soon. I got to the Park and the gates were open so I drove in. I got the gear out and started hunting. That little bit of breeze mixed with the flurries made it very miserable to hunt in. I kept hunting for about 2 1/2 hours but I could tell that the cold was getting to me and I was losing focus on my hunt. I did manage a Wheatie and I told myself...."if I find just 1 Silver, that's good enough for me". My fingers were frozen due to no real movement while holding onto the Detector and swinging but I kept going. I made my way back to where I dug all the Silver at the day before and finally came across a Signal that read 31 but would also go to 30 at times. I tried different directions and 1 direction, I couldn't get anything but a null but another direction, I could tell there was something definitely there. I dug down and was rewarded with yet another Silver Rosie. I re-checked the hole and a solid null. I covered the hole and that was enough for me and I packed it in. For the amount of time I hunted on 3 separate days, I don't think I did too bad. At least I didn't catch a cold like Bryce did!:poke: Hope by now that your feeling much better and pulling a few Deepie's from Coinmagnets Park.

Now for Totals. I found 12 Silver which were 1 Silver Washington Quarter dated 1964-d, 2 Mercury Dimes dated 1927,1945-d, 8 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1948-d,1950,1952-d,1959-d,1961-d,1963-d,(2)1964-d, and 1 Canadian Dime dated 1931. For Wheat Pennies I only found 5 and they are dated 1917,1936-d,1937-d,1947-d and 1951-d. The Misc Items were all found in Lindenwood Park except the Firestone Item. I found a Lorus Mickey Mouse Watch that was in the same area as most of the Silver I found was, the Clear Plastic Cover for the Watch, a Bobcat Cub Scouts B.S.A. Pin, and a Round Item that is made of Silver. The Firestone Item was found at a Cemetery Parking Lot and I have no idea as to what it's use was. Hope you enjoyed the story and the pics. Thanks for looking and Good Luck and HH to all of you that are able to get a hunt in still. Mickey Mouse watch is cool. That is one of the neatest finds I've seen you make so far:thumbup:
As for hunting Coinmagnet's park....well its 33 degrees...spitting rain...blowing hard...and I feel worse now than I did 3 days ago. It feels like someone has my ears plugged shut...while firing an air hose up each nostril:thumbdown: It's also started moving into my chest...so only rest...and some good cold medicine will help at this point.
We might try and hunt for a couple of hours tomorrow...or maybe even Monday. We'll just see how it goes..but right now...I'm absolutely miserable:stars:
Glad you got some good huntin' in my friend...and I hope you don't get anything close to the head cold/sinus/chest garbage that I have..cause' it's nasty.
Take care James.

James.

Nice finds. I can only imagine what it feels like when it's 30 and the wind is blowing.

What is your usual method for cleaning your wheaties & silver?

Bryce,

Sounds like you need more than cold medicine. You'll be taking some antibiotics soon. Take care of yourself and rest up.

Detecting in 30 degree temp's isn't much fun King, especially when the wind is present. Doesn't take long for the finger tips to freeze. Now to answer your question.

For the Silver, I just use a Soft Toothbrush and run the Silver Coin under the faucet, rinsing off as much loose dirt as possible. I then wet the toothbrush and gently scrub the Coins surface, not putting too much pressure doing it since if there is still dirt, pushing too hard will make the dirt scratch the Coin. As you seen on some of the Silver here, some are turning Black due to being in wet ground. Later, I will use Electrolysis on the Silver Coins to remove the Black Crud and make them appear like they should.

As for the Wheats and other items, there has been a few different ways I have cleaned them in the past. There is always use of Peroxide which cleans most up nicely. If you boil the Peroxide and then put the Coins into it, it helps in releasing some of the dirt on the Coins but just make sure you don't leave them in too long or the Peroxide may overdue it and start taking some of the petina off of the Coins, thus revealing an Ugly Pitted Coin. Once the Coins are taken out of the Peroxide, I then will use sometimes a Fine Brass Brush and gently scrub the Coin, making sure to wet the Brush and Coin also, and then rinse it off under the faucet. The less corroded Coins, you can use a Plastic Bristled Brush and have the same effects.

Recently though, I have just ran the Coin under the faucet, getting it wet, then adding a drop of Dish Soap to the surface of the Coin, and then wet a Plastic Bristled Brush and scrub the Coins surfaces. I then just rinse off and wipe the Coin off with a rag and done. Some Coins you can't do much with and some turn out pretty ugly....but there is a few that turn out pretty nice, just depends in what kind of ground they were in.

There is also the method of a Rock Tumbler but I have yet to purchase one for cleaning of Coins. I hope this answered your question King. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you. Hope you strike some Silver soon!

You could always have yourself a nice Hot Brandy. That'll make the nose run and get rid of that cold for sure. You may look like a huge snot ball but hey, it might be worth it.:rofl: Seriously though, sorry to hear your in that tough of shape Bryce. It's a good thing you didn't go out detecting in those temp's when it's raining or you may have gotten pneumonia if you don't already have it. I am glad you liked that Mickey Watch. I was kinda shocked when I seen what it was at first and would have never thought of pulling something like that from the ground. But that's why we love this hobby....don't we Bryce!:detecting: You just never know what will be un-earthed next. Thanks for the reply friend and hope your feeling much better real soon. I still would like to see 1 more post from the Bryce-Man before freeze-up. I really enjoy the reading! Good Luck and HH buddy!

up on a lot of us but one good thing about it is that now the long task of doing more Research can be done without the interruptions of getting the itch and detecting. Plus, it's a new start on finds in the Spring! Thanks for the reply Chris. Hope to hunt with you either around here or maybe a trip out your way next year. Until then, Good Luck and HH if your able to get out.:detecting:

I'd say I did rather well the 2nd outing, averaging 10 Silver to 3 Wheats....wouldn't you say. Sure am going to miss getting out but now to start finding more sites to go to next Spring. Thank you for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you if your still able to do some hunting in your area.

Right now it's 70

And this time, bring back some Silver! If you drive around and find any old area's with business's that have Boulevard's, hit them because there's Silver in them if you can't find any other sites to detect at. Hope to see you post something tomorrow. Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

Me too. I have to go look at my new place tomorrow at 10:30 and then I'll get a quick workout in at the gym. I'll probably get in at least 3 hours tomorrow. I have Mo & Tues to swing too \O/

I am going to make my goal to get one silver within those three days.

I'm hoping to maybe get out tomorrow and do a little diggin' but I won't know for sure until morning. First, I'll have to check the ground and see how hard it is and then what the weather holds for the day. With a little luck, I can hit the Golf Course maybe for awhile and see if I can't pop out some Barber. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you on your hunts.:detecting:

You have the gumption and grit of a go getter Pit Bull when it comes to finding silver and oldies, especially in your type or weather. My hat is off to you as I probably would have hit the warmth of the easy chair and watched sports on TV. Again I say nice finds and keeping hoping for another good day before it totally freezes up for you. Looking forward to your year end post as it has to be very impressive as they have been in the past.
HH John

It's tough concentrating on Signals when it's cold out, especially on the Deep Iffy one's....but it's worth it if there's Silver in the hole. I'd like to get out once more but if it doesn't happen, that's fine with me. Then I can start researching (have already started) for New Sites until Spring. I'll tally up the Finds Totals soon enough. Thanks again and Good Luck and HH to you.

I was out there for 3 hours. I just got clad. Near the end a guy pulls near me with his daughter and asks how far can my MD go for depth. He then pulls out a 1826 LC and shows me he found it on his cellar floor! I said you floor must be dirt and there is probably more there. He said he is going to buy a MD and what could he get for 200+ dollars. I told him to get a Garrett 250 so he can search his floor & garden. That LC sure did look sweet though. It was 0-29 on my SE. Does that sound about right? He asked me about cleaning it and I directed him to a few sites or to google search on how to clean a LC. Fortunately he was smart enough not to try and clean it first without investigating proper cleaning methods for an old coin. I can't wait to find one of those babies. My day will come. Tomorrow is a new day.

Oh yeah, as soon as my deposited check clears Tuesday I am getting me the Pistol Probe. I already bought some white spray paint so it doesn't look like a gun in a holster while I'm hunting. My present probe is about as useful as tits on a bull! That alone is going to save me boatloads of time while hunting. I can't wait to get it. Should have it by the end of the week.

HEY JAMES, NOW THATS A CRAP LOAD OF SILVER AND I LOVE THE MICKEY MOUSE WATCH  STAY WARM AND KEEP DIGGING...PHIL :super:

James, great post interesting how you dealt with the weather.Incredible finds for three hunts a lot of silver. The park where I hunt there's a little walk from the park and go to get in the park.Usually in cold weather my hands are my weak link wet gloves and I'm done.High winds and low temps can bring the wind chill numbers very low and make hunting miserable. When I was in the Air Force and some one screwed up LOL your reward order's for Greenland or Bismark ND so my guess Fargo is one of the coldest places to hunt in the continental US? HH Ron
