Well, here is the results from 2 Saturday's ago that I never got around in posting until now. I've been quite busy with working late and also trying to get in a few short hunts during the week to see what I could get, thus not having much time to clean up the finds and getting them posted. So here is Last Saturday's Haul and hope you enjoy looking at all the neat finds.
Also, I will have another short Post comin' up from a short hunt on Wednesday and Thursday, both together. Just a few finds in that Post. Now let's get this thing rollin'!
Last Saturday, Dale and I headed out once again in the search for some nice Old Coins and anything else we could come up with. The plans were to check out an Old Fairgrounds but then decided to go somewhere else. We drove around and looked a site over that I know probably yields lots of Keepers but it was overgrown and it would have needed to be hayed in order to get the Search Coil close to the ground.
So we jumped back into Dale's Van and we started to head to a Park where I had been making a lot of finds lately until I told Dale we should stop and try some Vacant Lots that the City owned where houses use to be since we were driving by them. He said alright and we got out the gear and started hunting. As soon as I started hunting, I got the classic IH reading and dug a plug. Out pops an 1897 IH from 8" Deep. I tried calling Dale over to tell him that there were possibly Barber Coins here but he couldn't hear me. I then was going to try and call his name louder until I seen an older gentleman coming across the street, heading in Dale's direction. Dale said hi and started chatting with the fellow. The guy said he had a Metal Detector also and that we probably wouldn't find anything since there was a lot of fill brought in but he didn't know how good of machines we had or how well we know our machines either. He started to tell Dale about some Gardens down the hill and took Dale down to one of them. As Dale was getting some knowledge from this person, I was popping out IH's, Wheats, and had 2 Tokens by the time they came back up the hill. As the gentleman left, I called over to Dale and asked what he said to him. He told me that he showed him where some Gardens were, which Dale found 1 Wheatie, but it was so over-grown that Dale couldn't detect it. I told Dale that there might be Barber here and told him what I had already found. He asked where and I showed him. He then shot across into a different yard and started to make some finds of his own. We kept hunting these lots for a few hours and was having a blast doing them.
I was on one lot when another fellow came over that lived next to the lot I was detecting in and asked if I had found anything yet. I told him a little bit, but only a few Wheats since I didn't want to let on that there was some nice Old Stuff still in the yards since he also had a Detector, but was a cheap one that cost him $149.99. We chatted a bit about how many houses were there and he took me to a few different lots and told me who lived in each house and what kinds of going on's went on along with yard set-ups. As we chatted, I detected and was digging out a few Wheats while he watched. Then I got an IH reading and dug that one. Yep, another IH dated 1895. I showed it to him and he said that was a pretty good find and that I was finding more stuff than he does with his Detector. Little did he know, but before he had come over, I was about to give up on that yard and go back to where I originally started since the Targets were few and far between, or at least I thought they were. I had gotten a 27 reading that only read a couple inches Deep and thought I better dig it. I'm glad I did because that hole was LOADED! I dug down and out pops a Wheatie. Covered it back up and swung over it and another Signal. Re-dug the Plug and out pops another Wheatie. Stuck the Probe in the hole and more Signals. Dug more dirt out and out pops a Silver Rosie and a few more Wheats. Retried the Probe and yet more Signals. I was starting to get excited since that was getting to be a lot of Keepers from one hole and had hopes of more Silver but in larger denomination coming out but it didn't. I dug more dirt out and about 8 Coins come out again, 2 Mercs and a bunch more Wheats along with an Older Jefferson Nickel. Did another recheck of the hole and got a few more Wheats before it finally went silent. I didn't keep the Coins separate since at first I didn't think that there was going to be that many Coins in 1 hole and when I finally got them all out, that's when I wished I had and also kept track of how many came out. I figured that there was at least 20 Coins if not a few more in that single hole. I never told the fellow I was talking to about it until Dale came over and asked if I had found anything more. I told him yes and started telling him I got an IH, and then told Dale about all the Coins I got from 1 hole while the guy stood there in amazement as I told Dale what was in it and about how many Coins there was. I also had dug another Good For Token that was Super Deep. This thing was all of 11"! I showed it to the fellow standing there with us and to Dale. I then asked Dale if he had found anything else and he told me a few Wheats, a Canadian Large Cent, a couple Mercs, a Rosie, and also a Token which was the same as one of the Tokens I had found at the beginning of the hunt. We kept hunting for awhile longer and got more Keepers.
The fellow next door came over again when Dale left and was on his Golf Cart with some boxes. I stopped what I was doing and he started showing me what he digs when he Detects. The 1st box contained lots of broken glass bottles, pieces of broken plates, bones, and other stuff. I didn't know what to think since I didn't really know why he had kept all that junk but I kept looking for something that was worth saving but didn't. In the 2nd box, he opened it and it was completely full of Iron. Nails, Horse Shoes, you name it, if it was Iron, it was in this box! There was forks, spoons, knifes, and all kinds of stuff also but nothing neat like Watch Fobs or any other item of interest. He then left again and I started hunting again. It was starting to get late in the day and I finally walked up to Dale and told him that we should move on since Dale wanted to go look over some other spots. We headed to the Van Detecting of course, and was about to turn the Detector off when I got a Deep reading that was giving me a 26 most of the time. I figured it was going to be either a Deep Wheat or an Indian Head. I had Dale go over it and he said that it was a Coin also. I dug it and at about 11", an IH surfaced. I seen the back first and it was worn. I then was hoping to at least see the Date of 1880 on the front but was pleasantly surprised when I found the Date of 1865. I handed it to Dale and told him Indian Head and told him try to beat that year. He couldn't believe I had pulled that old of an IH but the proof was in his hands. We then got into the Van and headed over to the Park.
We got to the Park and I told Dale where I had found most of the Coins at earlier. We started detecting and I got a Signal that read 31 but it would now and then go to 28. I dug a Plug and out pops a Merc. I rechecked the hole and a Solid Null. I worked a bit longer and went over to the area where I had dug a lot of Coins the last time I was there. I got a Super Deep 26 that was barely audible but I could tell that there was something there, so I dug and about 11", out pops another Merc. I then covered the hole and started going doing a crawl with the Pro Coil and started to find a few barely audible Wheats that were about as Deep. I then asked Dale what he was finding and he told me he had found a Barber Dime, an IH, and a Wheatie or 2. I told him what I had and we started hunting again. I got back up to the area where I had dug the 1st Merc and got a Loud 30 that didn't have any Coin Icon next to the number. I kept sweeping over the Target and it stayed 30. I dug it and out pops a Silver Quarter. Stuck the Probe into the hole and another Solid Null. We kept detecting for a bit longer and only found a few more Wheats but there is still some Keepers yet to be had at that Park. We packed it in and started heading back for home. I told Dale we did pretty good for the day and he said we did a lot better than he had expected to do and was happy with his finds as well. So all in all, it was a really great day of detecting with a ton of finds to bring back home. So now onto the totals.
I got 7 Silver, which consisted of 1 Silver Washington Quarter dated 1951-d, 4 Mercury Dimes dated (2)1944,(2)1945 and 2 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1951 and 1957-d. I dug a total of 5 IH's also, which are dated 1865,1895,1897,1898, and 1901. I also found 1 Nickel being a 1955-d Jefferson and 3 Older Canadian Cents dated 1928,1941, and 1957. The rest of the finds will be in the other postings coming shortly. Hope you liked the Story and the Pics. Thanks for looking and Good Luck and HH to you all.
