Lesche Digger Question

Wooden Nickel

New member
I have been out a few times using my Lesche digger. I have found that the toothed edge is virtually useless for cutting through roots. They are not sharp, and are too thick to do much good.

Has anyone sharpened the teeth, as is, with good results?

Has anyone thinned down the blade with a file or grinder before sharpening? Any problems with taking out the temper using a grinder?

I want to be able to cut through roots.

What experiences have you had with an obviously good digger but poor cutter.

What roots are you trying to cut?

Small tree roots, up to one inch or so.

OK.....mmmmm yeah. The Leshe wasn't meant for cutting tree roots. It was for cutting tough grass and weed roots, not trees.

A one inch tree root is a pretty good sized root for a Lesche even a 1/2 inch root is a challenge. You might be in the market for a folding hand saw, they are not too expensive, $10 or less.

@matthias - thanks for the tip. I'm a forester, and wouldn't cut any roots that might damage a tree to the point of serious injury. Besides, I hunt a lot in the woods and cutting a root here, a root there, doesn't mean anything. If I can figure it out, I'm going to figure out how to make my Lesche double as a pruning saw:rofl:

Thanks.

Here is my root cutting system. The knife will take care of anything up to about 1/2" above that I use the little folding saw. The knife works pretty good if I can get the blade below the root and kind of use that as a lever to cut the root.

You can sharpen the edges to help with cutting. I have also put teeth on the other side so as to make it more "ambidextrous". Hasn't hurt it a bit. In addition, I glue either a piece of rubber or thick leather on the back where the handle is attached to lessen the fingers rubbing on the metal. I just cut a hole and slip it over the handle and glue it into place then trim so only the back is covered.
