Lets discuss again Minelabs next version of the Sovereign

Assuming it will ever come out. I think that a more distinct variation on target id sounds would be the way to go for Minelab. I figure if Minelab made the BBS analog sounds digital you would get a better distinction between zincs vs copper, and silver.
Also the new 11" coil that is used on the E-trac would be a great option. I bet Minelab will incorporate the V-flex technology that is used on the X-terras, therefore bridging the analog and digital world, which would be great on a new version of the Sovereign.
what do you think.

take care

The only change I would make while still keeping the Sovereign a Sovereign without changing it into something like the Explorer would be to expand the discrimination range with a low iron tone to ID iron. This would improve it's sensitivity to small gold. Even though it would still ID small gold chains and such down in the iron range it's sensitivity to larger small gold in the foil through nickel/pulltab range would be greatly improved. This might also help with iron falsing and less masking of targets in iron.

I am not strictly a minelab user although I have an Elite, for the beach and pasture. The one change I would welcome I suppose would be the increasing the recovery speed.

I'd really like to see an optional analog type meter like the Whites 6000 had, I still like the digital Minelab meter but I also like and prefer the older defleting needle type - one that can be calibrated by the user as he/she changes accessories like search coils and settings.

hiya jason,,long time,,,,,,i spoke to a friend of mine who put the large coil on his sov. g.t. and it was untameable,,just too eratic,,he says the best big coil is the 10 inch and no larger???rgds comcat:ukflag:

I agree with crazyman....just expand the iron range a little. The sovereign is a brilliant machine....it ain't broke so don't fix it.Too many of the features people want in a machine are just gimmicks. If you want to be really successful at metal detecting you have to put in a lot of hard work. This means that if you are looking for valuable non ferrous items you need to use just as much discrim as it takes to knock out small annoying iron and dig everything else.If you rely on meters and tones too much you will miss a lot of valuable stuff......unfortunately thats the reality.

I had previous beach experience with an Excal 1000 and dug a bunch of zinc pennies because I couldn't distinguish tones from copper/silver. I recently bought a NIB XS2aPro with a remote all metal switch. My mentor told me to forgo a meter and learn the tones. Against his advice I listened to the consensus here and bought a 180 meter. One of my first sites was a very well used 3 acre concert venue that my I have exclusive permissin to hunt. In the first 4 hour hunt, I dug $90.00 in clad, (serious backache!) 2 silver rings and 2 gold rings. I dug 4 zinc pennies in the first five minutes, and never dug another one. The meter drove home the difference in tone and it's now ingrained in my mental arsenal. Bottom line: use your meter to help you learn the tones, so you'll not have to rely on it day to day. I've only been detecting for about 3 years, but after usng the meter as a training aid instead of a decision maker, I went from tone challenged to confident in a very short time.

Have a factory built in remote 'mode change' plug so I don't have to tear into the innard's and void a warranty to install one.

Leave the rest alone. Keep it quirky so that everybody and their dog don't want to use one and instead buy something else.

if it aint broke dont fixt it !!! the sov is a cult machine. I am on my third one now and would not swap my elite for anythin !!! if the tector is setup properly the recovery issue is no problem, if you work low & slow in the iron you will find everything thats there to be found. I have done many tests marking out an arrea and using several different detectors which have included whites V3 & explorers and other stuff and the sov aint missed nothin !!! Its a simple tector with awsome credentials which in the right hands will match anythin.... the only thing i would change would be the crappy control box and make a much neater one and then put it on a whites shaft for perfect balance ....

Long live the sov !!!!!!!

XS 2 IS KING OF THE JUNGLE SLOW SWEEPS = DEEP SILVER AND COPPER U NO WHAT IAM TALKING ABOUT TAKE THE METER OFF AFTER 30 DAYS U DONT NEED IT ANYMORE BRING A SHOVEL

I'll say it again but much shorter in this new thread: Weight is an issue. Lipo battery will drop some. Upper metal shaft should be aluminum or atleast a much less thick steal. Lower rod should be carbon instead of fiberglass to also drop some weight. I like the idea of an adjustable iron mask, or at least iron mask OFF should allow all iron signals to come through. At times in the woods I'm looking for iron signals as I hunt, as they indicate activity. I guess I could hunt in all metal until I find such a spot but I like to hear the iron as I hunt most of the time. Shorten the cables on the coils and meter and just provide an extension cable if you want to hipmount. The hand grip should be changed to a more robust rubber as the foam breaks off. The plastic control housing should be metal like the whites or at least a better plastic. The knobs/switches should have rubber boots to protect them. The meter adjustment dial should have a snap on cover to prevent bumping it while hunting. A way to adjust the sweep/recovery speed would be nice, like say slow sweep/slow recovery to aid in finding deep targets and fast sweep/fast recovery for hunting in trash or if you want to pick up the sweep speed alot.

As per another Post, I would like to see a Better Housing for the unit. Another Feature that has not been mentioned. Find a way to Pinpoint the Target, like the center of the coil. I have to look for 2 inches in all directions and this create's a bigger plug
Thanks

The 11" Pro Coil would be nice, or any new coil in the 11 to 12" range that is much lighter than the 10" or even the S-12.
