Lets talk coils !

I am not fond of the large stock coil and want to get a smaller coil.

It seems like the Sunray X8 looks like a good coil.
Not to big and not to small.

Anyone using it? Your thoughts?

Hi"
I was told the smaller the coil you get less depth & with the sun ray coil you could lose between 1/2 or a third knocked off?, I was advised to get SEF 8"x6" as it was small enough to get around iron but for its size has great depth. I have one on order and will post some results as soon as Ive tested it, hope this is of some help?

I just find a medium coil or smaller coil easier to pinpoint
and a better feel.

When I had the Whites .... my favorite size was a 6x10.

larryk56 - I agree, I've had my safari now 2 months and it still takes me some getting used to the the stock 11"coil and what's become a necessity- using a pin pointer (currently, a bulky Automax Precision V4 Pinpointer ). The greater depth and potential finds attained w/the stock 11"coil compared to my BH Landstar w/ 8 coil, makes it all worthwhile. Yeah, I didn't have to pinpoint with the 8 inch coil, and it was easier to swing, as IMO, it's design worked like a built in pin-pointer, but absolutely no complaints here !

Hi Guys"
Have been out 3 times now here in UK with the 8"x6" SEF coil & I'm quite impressed so far.
The 1st hunt was only for 2 hrs before I went to work ( just had to give it a try :detecting:) turned up 2 coins 1 modern pound & a silver Victorian shilling 1942 this was in a very trashy wood full of old & modern junk.
2nd hunt was for 4 hrs in a pasture field with cows managed 1 brass Victorian threepence 1945 / 2 Victorian Penny's 1873 / 1 Victorian 1/2 penny 1862/ 1 clipped Victorian farthing / a broken match striker / small buckle "Georgian I think" & 4 shotgun caps.
3rd hunt was in another wood again a mixture of old & modern junk inc building materials turned up 9 modern coins / silver ring about 1"& half with diamond & flower pattern-too light to be real silver & no hallmark / a small antique brooch minus the pin very delicate looks to gold & enameled ? needs a good clean / 10 shotgun caps.
So to conclude the 8"x 6" SEF allowed me to get close up to barbed wire & metal fences with no problem work in & around the junk & still found me stuff between 2" & 9" in depth so far.:clapping: works for me!
Cheers from UK:ukflag:

Hi Fred,

Thanks for sharing your review on the coil.

Independent reviews like yours are always good to read.
Thanks for sharing and good hunting!

I should have my X5 today. I'll post my findings as well.

Happy Hunting!
Larry

Coil reviews and the likes and kislikes should be very similar to those posted over on the Explorer and E-track forums. the coils ALL swap between the 3 machines.

Hello! ....I finally had a chance to get out yesterday with
the Sunray X-5 coil. Here are my thoughts on the coil.

My first impression of the coil right out of the box was that the coil
is well made.

I found the X-5 to be super easy to pinpoint and the tones are nice
and crisp. Also target separation is very good. Depth is good
and no complaints.

I was at my local dealer today and he told me something that I had never heard before! I have a excelerator 8" coil that I have used with my safari. He told me the electric circut in the excelerator could damage my safari! I really put a lot of trust in this man, he has never led me astray before, so I'm putting my excelerator up!! Shorty2

I got a 8X6 back ordered through kellyco let you know how it works when I get it thanks for all the posts in helping make my decision between it and the X5.
