Between (comparing) these two detectors, the Gamma & Omega---what are the most important things you like or dis-like between the two?---You don't have to own (or have used) these two detectors to answer this (although preferred).----Just what you have researched or learned about the two would suffice though. ;)-------------Thanks, Del

I've never owned or used either, but I thought seriously about buying one of them awhile back. I ended up buying the Fisher Gold Bug Pro 4.0 instead. If I had to pick one from what I've read, I'd would go with the Gamma, because I like the display better, it cost less and they say it's more stable.

Del, I've never researched or owned the Gamma, but I can attest that the Omega is a coin shooting delight. 8 or 9 out of 10 places I hunt I am able to run the Omega with 99 sen and 1 disc with any of the three coils I have for it and it runs quiet and stable. And, it really id's great at some very nice depths. HH jim tn

Functionally, the Gamma and Omega are virtually identical. The differences are basically the things you can see looking at pictures. There may be some minor differences in how things are displayed and in the features available in the user interface, it's been a long time since I had a Gamma in my hands.

Some people are fine with flubber keypads. I just flat don't like 'em at all. I do like the knobs & tactile touchpad front panel of the Omega. Of all the machines we make at any price, the Omega was my favorite until the GB/G2 which also has a rather similar knobs & tactile touchpad front panel. Now it's a tossup: if gold prospecting is part of the picture, then it'd have to be a GB/G2, but if not, then probably the Omega.

Just for what it's worth, the Fisher F5 is functionally very similar to the Gamma and Omega. However, different mechanical package and no-menu everything-always-in-plain-view knobby user interface. If you do a lot of hunting in all metals autotune mode, the Fisher F5 has the advantage of separate threshold and gain control.

I was going to respond yesterday when we had to head off to a big family picnic. Then I came home and elevated my leg and got some much needed rest and pain relief, never getting to your forum post.

So, I just finished reading the replies and the best of them, naturally, was from Dave J. Who ought to know but him, right?

I have two friends who prefer the Gamma because it was $100 cheaper, even though both are listed at fantastic prices. Why do they like the Gamma over the Omega? Both felt the Omega was 'noisier' in the three locations we compared them. There are just some simple Sensitivity adjustment differences.

Most people like the Omega more, as I do, because we prefer the added display information over the Gamma, and we like the touch-pads and quick adjustment functions. Much better than scrolling through a 'menu' or 'Mode' adjustment setting to fine the feature you want to use. Oh, both of them don't like touch-pads based on some older models that had some glitches from back in the late '80s.

As Dave mentioned, their actual field performance is very close and, if you use the same coil on each model, it gets too close to call most of the time. My preference is for the rod set-up of the Omega, the stock coil of the Omega, the quick and easy adjustments of the Omega and more display information.

Oh, I can't forget the fact that while the Gamma has performed just fine for me, the Omega is my #1 pick for a detector for 'coin hunting' and 'pleasure hunting' unless I plan to hunt in the All Metal mode most of the time, or want response and recovery that's just a little faster in the Discriminate mode. For those uses, the G2 is my pick. The Omega w/5" DD coil is terrific, and the G2 w/5" DD is just a bit more like 'awesome' rather then terrific.

I know there weren't that many replies, but while there is very little difference, the Omega is the one that got my pick.

I have owned BOTH. Gamma seemed hotter (believe it or not)...biggest complaint with Gamma , as Dave J said the Omegas controls are much more user friendly and the Gamma was constantly allowing dirt in behind the the buttons and they would stick. hated that. Bill

You know when you get a reply from Dave Johnson and Monte there isnt that much more that i can add that those two and the others have not touched on.I can only tell you that i own both the Gamma and the Omega and im very happy with both.I rate the Omega a 10 and the Gamma an 8.5 lol, I like the feel of the Omega just a little better and the user face but they are both fantastic coin hunters which is the type of hunting i do.I always take both detectors with me and some times have a hard time deciding which one to use.I keep the 5 inch dd coil on the Gamma and the std 10 inch elliptical on the Omega and have the 11inch on a seperate rod for changing to the Omega if i desire to.I do find the Gamma a more quiet running machine at higher sens but that may be due to using the smaller coil on it as well.I just love that little 5 inch coil. You can not go wrong with either one for they are in my opinion great coin hunting machine just like thier baby brother the Delta 4000, dont ever sell that one short for its a steal at that price point for what it does and it does it WELL.the gamma and the Omega are so close in performance you wont go wrong with either one...Have a great summer everyone and lets recover some more history lol.....Markmac
