I was going to respond yesterday when we had to head off to a big family picnic. Then I came home and elevated my leg and got some much needed rest and pain relief, never getting to your forum post.
So, I just finished reading the replies and the best of them, naturally, was from Dave J. Who ought to know but him, right?
I have two friends who prefer the Gamma because it was $100 cheaper, even though both are listed at fantastic prices. Why do they like the Gamma over the Omega? Both felt the Omega was 'noisier' in the three locations we compared them. There are just some simple Sensitivity adjustment differences.
Most people like the Omega more, as I do, because we prefer the added display information over the Gamma, and we like the touch-pads and quick adjustment functions. Much better than scrolling through a 'menu' or 'Mode' adjustment setting to fine the feature you want to use. Oh, both of them don't like touch-pads based on some older models that had some glitches from back in the late '80s.
As Dave mentioned, their actual field performance is very close and, if you use the same coil on each model, it gets too close to call most of the time. My preference is for the rod set-up of the Omega, the stock coil of the Omega, the quick and easy adjustments of the Omega and more display information.
Oh, I can't forget the fact that while the Gamma has performed just fine for me, the Omega is my #1 pick for a detector for 'coin hunting' and 'pleasure hunting' unless I plan to hunt in the All Metal mode most of the time, or want response and recovery that's just a little faster in the Discriminate mode. For those uses, the G2 is my pick. The Omega w/5" DD coil is terrific, and the G2 w/5" DD is just a bit more like 'awesome' rather then terrific.
I know there weren't that many replies, but while there is very little difference, the Omega is the one that got my pick.
