Locating targets

I thought this might be interesting especially to new users. Ive been asked when out hunting with a buddy why i am circling a target. Well the reason I do it may or may not be for the same reason other do. Im trying to get a repeated tone ... especially one of the same pitch. I like to see if the targer moves or changes tone. Often Iron will move or just plain disappear from another direction. I also find if i play with a target i can make it repeat the same tone.... even making a BAD weak target sound good. I like to see where it hits in different directions on the smart screen. I sometimes get that high great tone.... then notice it jumps to the lower right bottom of the screen like a rusty bottle cap. One of my biggest reasons is occasionally i get lazy and i get that weak signal that just says dig me. Once i do it disappears in the ground. Why?? because i may have been running too much sensitivity and the HALO from the back of my coil was picking up a target close but not under the coil. Those targets change tone..... a crushed can can be picked up a good ways away from your coil and sound like a NICE weak signal. Thats why i always wiggle the target to the tip of the coil and move around it some to ensure i have the target located. I was used to using the concentric coil when i first started using the Explorer and i knew where the sweet spot was. The DD acts a little different and i dug a LOT of empty hole on these kind of targets. I know what you are thinking.... use your Explorer pin pointer. That doesnt always works so dont count on it if there is a coin in the same hole as a large piece of iron. That could have been one of those iffy targets your buddy dug behind your.

Im retired.... ive got all the time in the world to dance around that target. My intent was to put some information out that miight be worth while. Im sorry you thought it was a waste of time. Perhaps you can share something.... ive seen you just registered a couple of hours ago and made a grand total of 2 posts. For some reason both of those posts you made were on mine. As far as my finds go if you are in the indy area id be more than glad to take you for a hunt at indy park. Who knows you MIGHT get lucky and learn something about dancing around a target.

A wise man once said..... id rather keep my mouth shut and let everyone think im a fool as open it and remove all doubt.

Captn.... someone said on an earlier post i have too much time on my hands, maybe so lol. I think its good that we can share information.... its like reading a book on here some info you can use and some just doesnt fit your style of hunting. I enjoy all the info from you guys that know how to bring home the silver that we left behind.

Dew, I hunt exactly as you describe, and that's why I spend more time listening, rather than wasting time chasing ghosts!

Im getting to old to DIG IT ALL. I enjoy my hunts and think ive done well on the old coins and silver this year hunting slow and listening more. I have no doubt this method is a time waster for those who want to hunt faster. But.... what ive learned is the RABBIT dont always finish with the best finds at the end of the day.

Hey Dew,

I just noticed that guy who made all of 2 posts so far on this forum, and both seem to be negative remarks toward both your recent posts.

That's never happened to me on my local California forum, but it has happened to me on other detecting forums. I know it won't phase you....just keep on making your informative posts, observations, finds, and continue to share your expertise with us all. 99% of us here on this forum appreciate it!!:thumbup:

Thanks Captn.... We cant let remarks on here bother us, everyone has an opinion. I think everyone on here has something to offer and bring to the forum. Like most information... some is good some not so good, but it all helps you learn. For me theres nothing more interesting than meeting or chatting with someone whose been around detecting for 40 years. Just a weath of info.... so i try and pass on what i learn in the field, and these are my opinions. Now you might get a snide remark if you challenge my finds. I dont think anyone appreciates that. Hey.... but it all good right? Going to be a long winter.... lets play nice and post some questions, pictures, or observations.

That sounds good in theory penegrande, but to some of us with many years experience, Dew is sharing some very valuable information. Even if you don't mind digging a lot, his hunting style eliminates a lot of unnecessary holes in the ground and in some places, that is the difference between getting banned or not from hunting that "hot spot". I would suggest taking his advise.

i took up metal detecting for fun and relaxation not racing love the explorers for there slow hunting style and i,ve got plenty of time to dance around a target if it gives me good info in return thanks for the good and interesting tip thats why i read all therse post it sure helps my learning curve thanks drew i,ll try your tip time to time so let the circle dance begin were are all indians circleing the wagon train of lost goodies

I too circle target when i hunt in iron and i suspect you cant go other way with Explorer, its just more easy to identificate what is under coil, but my lesson about iffy targets is to get one big plug with big shovel where I suspect target is, because other way is very easy to lose it with explorer. but for you friends in USA should be more harder with hand held diggers in the parks. when i disturb earth in not full digged hole i can loose target, but possibly because i dig all the signals. good luck all Stasys

it seems to me that this circle business is advised by all the detector manufactures. as part of confirming the target.
i came across a vid on you tube of a guy using an e-trac to demo just what drew described. and like drew, i for one can take my time hunting. i'm also retired. same as teleman i'm not into racing. it is a stress free hobby, for most anyway.

very well said widebody after all this is for fun is it not

I do the same exact thing Dew. Its better to analyse the target than to dig 10 inches and find rusty nail :ranting:. Which happens to me enough as it is.
One thing that I seem to find is alot of iffy signals tend to sound good at only 2 places of the circle, for example: 12 oclock and 6 oclock. That almost all the time is iron for me. Anyone else experience this?
Thanks, aaron

Erik, digging all targets its not wasting time in my place where i live and even more if I know place and what i found in. if its old place totaly in iron I can get one side and only one point signal in normal audio or audio 1 and easy its can be hamered coin or anything ells under coil , in new place its only one thing what I dont dig is foil, but this is very rare. Good point, field hunting for relics, especially in the UK, is a bit different than park and yard hunting.

No doubt Field, beach and woods hunting can be a totally different animal. If its not too trashy or iron ridden you can get a pretty good TID just because the targets are better seperated. You do have a tendency to dig almost all the targets. There are some GREAT relics that as coin and park hunters you just arent use to finding so you wont recognize the TID until you dig a few. Bring a shovel for fast removal and get some of the junk out of your way and you might pick up some of those 2 cents, 3 cents, IHs, Buttons, brass, copper, lead, and bronze objects. Even on the beach... i think Andy recommended the use of a pattern when time is limited so he didnt have to dig it all and could cover more ground. My post was directed toward those trashy parks where TID can be difficult. As you can see there are exceptions to it all. Enjoy the hobby guys and share what you learn.

the bottom line is, what ever works for you. if you like fast tracking or slow crawl it's totally your call. you are not racing against anyone else except in a compitition hunt. so there isn't a right or wrong way to hunt. either take the advise given or you don't. your treasure collection tells how well you do with your style of hunting. enjoy it while you can.
