looking for advice.. Se and 5" Sunray

Whats your thoughts on the 5" Sunray coil for trashy areas..and some of the settings you use in park areas with tabs..Lots and lots of tabs.

Elton,

I have the Sunray X-5 that I use on my SE and I love that coil. It works great in trash with excellent separation and stability. I've hit some silver dimes over 8" deep with it in my soil. Once it hits a signal it doesn't seem to drift off like some coils do even on iffy signal. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Hey baleniM (mirror) Minelab....At that kind of depth...what do you run your sensitivity at?....with the smaller coils I run it high as possible and on manual....and you?.....smaller coils can handle it and stay very stable I find.

Hi Elton, I like my 5" SR also. Seems to work very well in the trashier spots and also seems to get good depth. Once you leave the trash, though, you feel a bit undergunned:biggrin:

If it really trashy with a lot of pull tabs, etc. I may drop down to 10 manual so I can try to skim the top of the trash so to speak. If its fairly clean I'll run 25 or 26 manual depending on the soil. I very seldom can get over 26 with any coil around where I live in MS without a lot of falsing. I almost always use manual because I think the coil holds the signal better on the sweeps. It seems that in Auto if I get an iffy signal on a sweep, the machine resets the sensitivity before I can go back for another hit. I'll switch to auto if I'm in a lot of iron that hits above the iron mask setting I use but other than that, I use manual.

As with any smaller coil, on any machine/brand, you'll gain better target separation/averaging, but loose a bit on depth. I've noticed that I can usually up the sens. a bit more with the 5" coil, because ....... naturally ... it's "seeing" less ground (minerals). As for the "tabs" you allude to, that boils down to the age-old debate of "tab signals could be a good target" But reality is, there are some places where no one is a "hero" searching for nickels or gold rings (lest they go mad digging tabs, etc....). So if targets aren't necessarily deep (like in hardpan dry soil), then cherry picking with a 5" coil can produce more coins that a larger coil would mask on.

Elton...............I use an Excelerator E coil 4 inch.............i dig in the trashiest areas i can find.......i get very good depth with it.normaly i can get good targets up to 5 and 6 inches ..........as for the pull tabs .i dig every signal i get .........sometimes it pays some times it doesnt. however i can tell you I dug over 50 gold rings in the pulltab range..and there are diggers on here that will vouch for that.I also dug probably close to a pound of silver...as far as setting .I will send them to you in a pm.if you like ..I will be glad to tell you what they are.David

David........Thanks, and please send me anything you feel will help. I am very very new to the Se..Experienced with Whites, and Fishers only.
