looking for some advice

Hello E-trac users, I just picked up a ET last week and my result have been sub par, I did better with my ace 350 out of the box. I've read Andy's book, watched countless videos, tried Andy coin mode, factory settings, TTF, you name it. My problem is in my test garden I have 4'' 6" and "8 silver targets. I cant make head or tells out of the signals and sometimes it just nulls out. Very rarely will it show 43 or 46 on my test targets, let alone 12-46 ect.. I've been to various parks and sites around my town with my E-Trac and just come up empty handed. I'm at wits end with this thing and just needing some advice. Not many videos on youtube that actually show someone walking around looking for targets, thats my main problem. I find 43's and 46's and 39's and it just turns out to be falsings. Any advice would be wonderful.

Try switching from auto to manual sensitivity, start at about 25 and see if the ET can hit your planted coins.

If their recently planted, it may be difficult for any detector to hit them as there's no matrix built up yet.

your test garden area might be junky.

as far as falsing, falses can be very frustrating, just remember that falses dont usually repeat over the same spot, a coin will sound off on each pass over the same location.

as far as 43's 46's etc.... if theyre repeatable and the FE is somewhere below 17 or so for the most part that is a target worth digging.

ive been swinging since april and im just now getting really comfortable with it....all i can suggest is keep trying and keep digging and maybe at some point what its telling you will start to gradually come into focus. i know it seems overwhelming at first.

id suggest trying the stock coin mode in auto sensitivity for a while. (in multi tone conductive). at least until you get the hang of it. having your discrimination wide open is too overwhelming for someone new to the machine.

youre trying to go 100 miles an hour with your learners permit....the result will be nothing but frustration. crawl, then walk, then run.

probably what i needed to hear. its very frustrating to have a decent understanding after reading so much and yet get the machine and its totally different than what I thought.

Get andy sabish's book and read it cover to cover. Go play a bit then read the book again. It will all make sense then!

Go to page 113 in Andy's book and set up this pattern. The pattern is tight and you will miss a few finds at first but it will help you find coins to start. Then when you become comfortable you can open her up all you want. If it repeats both ways and it sounds good dig the signal and see what it is. You will learn from digging.

that is odd the very FIRST day I got my etrac, last year in spring 2010, I assembled it and went to an old house the 1st coin I dug with factory settings was a barber dime 8" deep with 2 nails in the hole!

Did you buy a new machine or used? Regardless do a factory reset. Noise cancel making sure there is nothing under your coil. That 8 inch coin should be no problem. Try that and if that machine will not respond to those buried targets something is bad wrong. Keep us posted. HH :minelab:

I bought the machine new from kellyco. I've check the coil nothing wrong as far as I can tell -- I can lift it in the air with no signal bouncing. my sensitivity is at 17-19 in my yard on auto +3 could that be something to do with the reason i'm not getting depth?

Put it on Ground DIFFICULT as it says in Andy's book for most of North American soil unless it's sand like at a beach then NORMAL Ground setting.
Set Trash on HIGH or whatever it ishelps with the see through capability then do a noise cancel over ground you have swept first to make sure there isn't any signals, leave all else alone go hunt in the factory coins pattern.

I found the Etrac emulator a huge help in learning the machine. (To be clear, I'm still learning the machine and probably will be learning it for some time.) Thus far I've been very impressed. Found 1945 quarter, 1918 dime, 1935 nickel and 5 wheats.

What I did was to do everything described in the manual and in Andy's book on the emulator. Made a huge difference in learning the operational side of the machine.

Hope that helps.

yes please note what this etracker is saying as ground setting at normal seems to not pick up those silver signals there have been a couple of people who have needed to have a coil change on there new detectors so keep that in mind
