Low tech meter mod...

I modded my 180 meter today with black electrical tape and a cut piece of thin blue cardboard... now I have a nice little flap covering the meter. I can hunt be sound and then check my meter when I feel I need to. I plan to check it less and less and try to train my ears to the tones.

We'll see how it works...

Yea, why not put on a blind fold instead and then remove that when you want to check the meter? Talk about tuning the world out and going by tones.

I own a meter as well, the XS2 180 meter, but have chosen not to use it during my learning curve. I'm not going to use it until I feel pretty comfortable hunting by tone alone. That's why I got rid of my DFX... I was depending too much on the screen to fill me on the targets. Now by using only tones with the Musky and now the Sovereign my finds have increased dramatically. I dig a lot more questionable signals now since I have no meter to tell me info. But by doing that I have tfound many good trgets I may have missed otherwise. Also due to most of my sites being dig all sites anyways I don't have much use for a VDI. I do plan on starting to use it now that I know where 90% of common targets fall into gone wise. I commend u for covering the meter, u will dfinitely get a better feel for what the sounds are telling u and u may realize that a meter isn't neccesary to be succesful. Only time I plan to use mine will be for coin shooting in parks...

I agree with how misleading a meter can be and how it will discourage digging targets that may very well be good ones. It should be used as a reference not as the decision maker. How recent is my conclusion on this matter? About 30 minutes ago, I was doing a "nail close to silver quarter coin" air test (targets on a board).

I tested with the Sovereign 10" Tornado, Omega 8K 11" DD and the Ace 250 4" Sniper coil.

Results with all machines, the tones were of course not the pure sound given off by a silver coin alone.

The meter readings on the Omega would say nickel, zinc, pull tab, screw cap and so would the resulting meter numbers, depending on the direction of sweep, with or without notch discrimination. The Ace displayed similar results.

The Sovereign sounds would be what I would call a mix of coin and ferrous.

So seeing the results and knowing how I have been placing too much faith in the meter and target ID, I would say I probably have passed up good targets in the last 7 months.
