Just got my first hand held GPS and now find I need to invest in a map software to do what I had planned on doing. I was going to save way-points of historical nature and apply them to modern map to print out from computer. However the Mapsend software is another $80, for maps to show county roads and towns. Are there any alternatives, as the topog map software has way more features than I really need.

I suggest you try OziExplorer www.oziexplorer.com . The shareware version has limited features but should do what you need. On internet, you can find some half decent, free maps for the US that will work with ozi.
