Making my way……

further north I stopped for an over night layover in a little town called Munising. After a good night of sleep I hit a local park where I detected for a short while. I managed a few dollars in clad that included a modern Canadian dime and some odds and ends. My favorite is the maple leaf that says Give Thanks

Well I decided to give this little area one last try before hitting the road to my next destination. I arrived and started swinging just before daybreak and uncovered a dollar coin, a few quarters and dimes. After it got light enough I moved out to the rear of the park and stumble upon a 1946 wheat, later an old ceramic jar lid and seal. Sparking my interest, I slowly combed the area and uncovered a 1920 Buff(a first for me) . Sadly, I was pressed for time and had to get on the road. Maybe I can swing back by there on my way home

My last stop of my journey was in Copper Harbor where I managed to get a little detecting in but not much. I focused on relics from an old mine and was able to get some square nails from the site.. Afterwards, I focused on trying to find a bit of raw copper and I'll post pictures later. Sorry for the late post but there was NO cell service there

Yea man! I've still got the Sharp Shooter attached to it. The F5 really seems to like. I'll take more time this weekend to exercise the pair of 5" coils on an OLD homesite permission my brother got for us.

Lastly, I was able to stop back by the old park in Lansing on the return home and managed to find quite a bit of clad, a dropped pair of large Vise Grips and oddly enough, a couple of old coins that were made into necklaces.

You are exactly right Ronstar. I've had some of the smallest pieces of silver fall under the coil and SHOUT loudly at me. Very distinctive sound it is.

Know it pretty well. Brings back memories.

Yea Coin Rescue, every place i visited in the UP was GREAT but Copper Harbor was my favorite by far. The people were fantastic and welcoming. I can understand what you mean by the area being tough to detect for coins, especially for a visitor. three days is not nearly enough time. I hope to get back there someday. i miss it already.

When we go up in the Summer I hunted the Mines with My Brother-in-law. Never found coins there. Sometime broken tools- like a Pick Axe I found at Mandan Mine - Must date back to 1860 when the mine was active. What we find are mainly chunks of copper missed by the miners. The mines in the Copper Harbor area pre-date electricity so miners used candles. Then later Cobalt Lamps.
When in College we used to look for open mine shafts to explore. In those days they were just surrounded by Barbed Wire. Later in the 1980's the Government paid to have then sealed in some ways.
There was one mine shaft in Calumet that caved in a few yeas back. The stuffed it with 1950 car bodies that eventually rusted out and the cement slab broke and fell in.
Lots of fun up there in the summer if you miss he black fly season.
