Meager finds from my last few hunts

Mark (MO)

New member
. . .minus the wheaties, that is. I haven't been able to find much silver lately, but I'm diggin' wheaties like there's no tomorrow. I probably have 3 dozen from my last two hunts alone. . .if only they were dimes instead of pennies. . .

Anyway, the tiny silver ring I found when I was hunting a civil war battlefield with Golddigger a couple of weeks ago. I didn't expect to find something like that there, but there it was. I found a couple of musket balls, and that was it. It was a great day, and it was fun to dig things up with my old hunting buddy.

I found the fish scale in one of our ghetto parks last weekend. It's only my second one, and it was cool to find. This one is a 1907. The other is a 1910. It's a pity that one wasn't a little earlier, so I'd at least have two different rulers on the front, but oh well. . .

The dimes, injun and buffalo I found a couple of days ago, in one of our local parks. Seeing all the cool stuff everyone is digging is getting me out more. I hope I can make it out a couple more times before the ground freezes.

Good hunting,

Mark

I think the ground is gonna' freeze pretty fast here. It's supposed to be crummy...cold...and rainy all week. I hope I can squeeze another hunt in too...even if it's only an hour or 2. Take care buddy.

Nice looking Silver Ring you found there. Congrats on a few Keepers and hope many more land in your pouch. Good Luck and HH.

Where do the fish scales come in on the Smartfind screen? Do they ring like silver does? They must come in close to where a silver three cent piece would but of course, I don't know where that is either. Up here in Minnesota I would have thought that I'd happen upon one at some point but not so. Very nice finds. Meager? I don't know about that as it is all relative. I see it this way: The less types you have found leaves more types to shoot for. How's that for a "Pollyanna" attitude ? Nice finds Mark.

hand-made. I found one with French lettering on the inside that turned out to be a hand-made ring from the 1800's, apparently there had been a group of French that tried there hand here at establishing a colony. It was fun to track down.

You have some nice finds there Mark.:clapping: I made a post a while back and called it meager, but I have learned my lesson. Nothing is meager and just being able to get out is what counts. Lot's of fellows are snowed in and the ground is frozen, so let's count our blessings that some of us are still able to get out and whatever we find is a treasure. HH.

What';s a fish scale? slang for an IH?? I've yet to find an IH & a buffalo nickel. Nice finds and pics.

By meager, I just meant that it wasn't that much to show for the hours I spent hunting. . .this is from my last 3 hunts, two of which were all day long, so it didn't seem like that much silver really, and nothing that old, but it was a blast getting it all, and even when the finds are coming slowly, it's still great just to be out digging.

Crispy, the two fish scales I have found both rang up like Indians. I'm sure there's some variability, like with any coin depending on depth, how worn the coin is, soil conditions, etc, but the two I've found rang up like IHs. I was with Golddigger once when he found a 3-center, and when I ran my coil over it, it rang up like a pulltab. That's probably one reason I've never found one. . .I don't dig those hits very often. If I'm in good deep soil though, I'll dig almost anything that's deep, so hopefully, it's just a matter of time.

King Ghidorah - 'fish scale' is a slang term for a Canadian silver 5-cent piece, similar to the older US half dimes. I'm not sure when they stopped making them, but they made them long after the US stopped making half-dimes. I don't know who started calling them fish scales, or if that term is only used on this forum, but I heard it here multiple times, and starting using it myself. . .

Good hunting,

Mark

Usually when their is a slang when you are told of it's origin you then see why it was names that.

For instance, Wheatie -- because it has wheat stalks on the back

Merc -- Cause it has a representation of Mercury-like indiviual on the coin

Fattie -- because the earlier IH wear larger

so why fish scale??

I looked around the net and it seems to refer to it's being small in size like a fish scale

Hey Mark..Nice ones! Like that fishscale

You still got my email or phone number? I told golddigger to tell ya to give me a shout sometime.

Been a while since we hunted together...give me a hollar sometime!

Hey Ted! It's been 'way to long! I lost your number quite a while back, when you quit hunting and wasted all your time playing music! :bouncy:

I got your message man. We'll get out soon. It's great to hear from you again man!

Mark

Yeah, I always figured it was something like that, but I didn't bother looking it up, and I wasn't sure how widely used it was.

Thanks man!

Mark

Way to go Mark. Love seeing that silver come out of the ground. Hopefully we can get to hunt together sometime.

If you are ever down near Springfield on the first Tuesday of any month, come by our club meeting. We would love to have you.
