Metal detecting wearing hearing aid

DirtAngler

New member
How many of the older members metal detect wearing hearing aids and what problems have you had doing this?

I have one I usually take it off as feed back at times
high squeal noises.
Other time works flawless no problems.

I wear the behind the ears aids as these are the most powerful ones I need (severe hearing loss), so I can not use them at all with headphones as the feedback is too great and can no hear any signals for all the squealing they do. Those that don't use as power full aids may be able too, but don't think I would want to if I could because of the moister that can collect and be bad for the aids. Now what i do is not use the aids find a good set of headphones that have great volume for the detector i am using. On the Sovereigns the Timberwolfs work the best, on the Explorers and E-Trac the Troy Pros have the best volume and found the Uni Probe I have seems to have enough but not as loud for me for any detector I don't have a Sun Ray Probe for and found a set of Bushmaster that seems to work on all of the detectors i have tried.
Most people I detect with say they can hear when I get a hit even 20 feet away as mine headphones are so loud.

My hearing is not to bad apart from a small range of frequencies but you could attach a signal booster to the detector (one that boosts small signals but also blocks out large hearing damaging ones) and plug your headphones into the unit or go for one of the new detectors like the Nokta Fors Core that has a vibrating handgrip and carry on wearing your hearing aid.

I always wear my hearing aids when detecting. I can hear the tones of my Sovereign GT much better with the hearing aids in place. My hearing aids are totally in the ear so I do not have the problem that some of the folks that wear the behind the ear types have.

I use my old set of hearing aids when I detect in the water with my Excal. as I do not want to get my new ones dunked and ruined.

Moisture is a killer of hearing aids. It causes the majority of problems that people have with hearing aids. That is why my hearing aids get put in a hearing aid dryer every night. My last set lasted for over six years and are still working but can no longer meet my volume requirements. The life expectancy of a set of hearing aids is three to five years if you do not use a hearing aid dryer.

You can make a vibrator that fits on a head ban or behind the ear to viberate for a target for about 12 dollars from parts from radio shack A friend that is totally deaf that reads lips use to make them as he and his friend was totally deaf, don't know what was in it but it was small and he would use it in a head band and now he uses a dioide light clipped on to the brim of his cap pointed towards his face and when it lights up he knows he has a hit he uses a red one I believe as the white ones on the beach he cant see too good so uses a red or blue on in daytime and white one at night. Bill Babb was his name as he made scoops he is in Phoenix Az now
