Minelab Meter Adjustments ?

OK all you meter experts .....Here's the deal ......I got my GT in the mail yesterday , and I have a Digisearch meter for it ( It actually says "Sovereign " and not Digisearch on the top face of the meter ) ......The meter will not settle in on 180 for a quarter......I have gone one way and the other on the adjustable pot in the back of the unit , but it will not go any lower than 187 when running the Tornado 10 inch coil ..... Are there any adjustments inside the meter to zero in on the 180 number when the meter pot is set at the 1/2 way point ? ......or would this be an adjustment that needs to be made inside the control box of the GT ? ..... Thanks in advance for your help ....Jim

If it just says "Sovereign" then it is the 550 meter that was sold with the Elite.
It has been modified for 180 by someone.
There is an adjustment inside the meter that will hopefully adjust the numbers down enough to get to 180. There is NO adjustment inside the detector to do this.

Thanks Art ....I appreciate the info .....Now to get inside this bugger .......That thin nut that holds the 6 pin connector in place is a tough one to get off .....What is the actual directions to take ths meter appart ? ... Thanks, Jim

What there is is 4 screws under the label on the face plate, then the calibration knob comes off the back and the nut that holds the control in place. Now it should slide out of the case as the cable connector stays in the case. When you have it out far enough to work on it you will see the course calibration control, it is surface mounted. Adjust the reg one that is on the shaft that comes out the back of the meter to the center position so it can be adjusted either way to adjust for different coils. Now with it apart you will have to hook it up to the GT and turn it on and adjust the course calibration control to as close to 180 as you can, when this is done you can put it all back together.
It sounds like someone did the 180 mod and didn't do the calibration before it was put back together.
If by chance someone didn't use the correct parts this can happen too and if it did I have some of the correct ones here if needed.

Remove the nut holding the external pot in place. Next, pull up the corners of the face plate decal. There is a little screw near each corner that has to be removed.
Ease out the innards by pushing on the external adjustment pot.You don't have to remove the connector on the back.
There is only one adjustment inside.

OK guys ...Thanks for all the info ......It appears that I have another issue going on here ......It looks like a wire is disconnected in the female plug that is on the end of the meter .....I took the connector apart as it was taped , so I could see what was going on ...... Here is the pinout that I have ......Please tell me if this is correct ....

All wires are soldered to the female connector except for the GREEN wire on the #3 section on the plug ....Please tell me if this should be connected

Pin 1- Red

Pin 2 - Black

Pin 3 was disconnected but looks like it SHOULD be connnected .....It's Green

Pin 4 is a Salmon colored wire

Pin 5 - Blue

Middle Pin - Nothing connected and no more wires to connect .....

Thanks again for your help .....Sincerely, Jim

Ron ,
The meter changed numbers since I took the tape off of the connector ....The readings are MUCH higher now ..... I think by taking the tape off , I may have disconnected the GREEN wire on #3 but I'm not sure .......Jim

If you are talking about the meter to box connector on the end of the meter's cable...
green hooks to pin 3 (ground) on mine.

Thanks Art ....Yes, I'm talking about the connector on the end of the Meter ........That Green wire is disconnected on mine, but looks like it was conneted at one time .... ....It looks like the wire was too short and was not soldered well ........I will connect it and see what I get .....I'll keep you guys posted .....Thanks again , ....Jim

The numbers are now jumping around on this meter .....Not sure what the deal is .....I will send it to Ron .....He's the meter man !!.....Thanks to all you guys who helped me out with this meter situation ....I really appreciate it .....Sincerely, Jim

Jim,may just need a wire pinned send it I'll take a look and re pin may need a 180 conversion kit? could probably get one off of Rick.I appreciate your confidence the Sovereign guys that are best though Art and Rick the real experts.HH Ron

If the bad ground was the problem to start with and fixing the ground makes it read way high, then it may be an unmodded 550 meter.
Normally a 550 will not adjust anywhere near low enough to get near 180, and a 180 meter cannot be adjusted up anywhere near to 550. That includes making an internal adjustment.
May be more bad connections or shorts in the cable plug. It's a tricky place to work.

Need help. I need to replace the Metal Connector on my Sovereign X S 2 Meter. I did not see this part available on Radio Shacks web site.. I'll be looking for it on the web. Maybe someone on this Board has them and can re-solder a new one on for me.

Thanks
