minelab safari tones and id numbers.

hi everyone,this is my first posting and i am from adelaide australia.i have a minelab safari,before that i owned a quattro.both machines are great but i think the extra speed of the safari is a help.recently i found a 925 silver ring an ear-ring plus the usual suspects of coins,buttons,plus the dreaded can tabs and caps.i love hitting the silver 38 ish id and sharp high tones make life easier.i still can get a bit unsure with lower carat gold rings as they can have very similar id numbers and tones to can tabs.i am using relic mode, low trash and sensitivity at 15.i think it can be a bit risky discriminating some of the low numbers say at 15 to 17 because my wife has a watch which falls right on 16.i usually beach hunt and any advice on this would be great.its fun to read everyones experiences and advise,thanks from peter27.

I love my safari and as of yet I haven't beach hunted. My family and I are going to Cape Cod in Ma. for 3or 4 days in mid to late April. Kids have spring vacation and boy do we need a little R&R. Been using the safari in parks, school yards, atc. Got the pinpointing down almost to a science. Good machine I like it alot. To be honest with you , I really didn't like that much at first, but now that I have learned how to use it , and know the sounds, it's great!!! We go to the Cape 3-5 times a year as it is only a 2.5 hr. drive. Good luck on the beach !!

Well I went detecting on my way home from work, didn't find much, 4clad dimes, 6 pennies, and a fairly old Sprinfield Street Railway token. These tokens are copper, smaller than a U.S. dime. Depending on the city they came from the centers are punched out with the first letter of the city. Talk to you later

Hi Peter, when you say you love hitting 38...are you finding gold on it or something else. I do a lot of beach work here in Ireland and find 37,38 to be mostly alu or some old coins, and gold for me ranges in the teens.
I generally only go by the tones in all metal, Ferrous and use the ID numbers out of curiosity before I dig as I have found the ID too unreliable as the main indicator, I have found the numbers bounce around too much and they change as you dig. Enjoy your detecting.

Here in the states, hitting a "38" on the Safari is almost like money in the bank. Invariably it turns out to be either a quarter or dime and very occasionally some kind of silver. You really have to like those "38's" and YES sometimes a "38" is either a penny or trash too!

[size=large]A 38 is either a dime or usually a quarter and sometimes but not too often a silver object as Mtnmn just stated. I also detect mostly beaches and a 38 in wet sand (be careful of getting your Safari wet otherwise it's toast)!! better to get a submersible, is usually either a quarter or an encrusted or corroded penny. I personally don't get toooo excited when I get a 38 but I do when I get a 39 which is a silver target OR a pesky soda can and they can be deep, so be prepared for something other than silver when 38-39 comes up![/size]

Having beach hunted last night, I found that recovered cans & canslaw tid at 36 in coin/jewelry,auto sens,low density on dry section of beach. No-date buffalo nickel registered a 15, zincolns were 35, clad quarters 38,clad dimes 37-38. I have had pre '82 Lincoln's read 38 occasionally,due to wet ground hunting .
