I've asked Ralph from Sunray about a probe for the x70. He said it was up to Minelab and was their corporate decision in Aust. not to offer the help needed for Sunray to make this probe. So if you would like a Sunray probe for your xterra then we all need to voice our opinion to the company and maybe they will listen... don't know if it will help but if enough of us email, write, or call, maybe they will.... :devil:
 
that is the only reason that I do not have an XT-70. I have three of Ralph's pinpointers and I can't imagine hunting without one. Yes, I'm spoiled and no, a hand held just won't do it for me.

I hope enough people read this and hit the emails hard enough that ML does something...:shrug:
 
How would you be able to make it work since there are different Khz coils available. Maybe I just don't understand but I thought the pin-pointer acts as a coil so with the micro processor connection between the coil and the housing how could you match the coil to the pin-pointer? Maybe thats where the secret lies. If I was Minelab I might not want to give up my secrets to the connection. Just my opinion.. But then again maybe not a problem..

Ok to someone that uses a hand held besides being on the detector what are the advantages? Thanks, Beale.
 
it uses the detector as the lead,,, im it like having an extension of the all metal mode on the end of you probe and the id shows what the signal is(close).
 
How far away does the signal hit? I guess I am just wondering because the X-70 does a right fair job of pinpointing itself, Beale.
 
I know there are a lot of us out there that want to play around with a Xterra but it aint going to happen without the Sunray Probe. My Wife and son both bought Garrett's last year because they have the Sunray probes. I think its time for Minelab to Wake UP

Here are my thoughts.

I do not use the probe for pinpointing. The X-70 does a good job at that. The issues are:
* Is the target in the plug/dirt pile or still in the hole.
* If in the hole, then where in the hole?.
* If in the dirt, then where in the dirt.
* It is very cumbersome to have to keep picking up the detector and waving the coil to answer those decisions.
* Coins that are less than 2" deep can problematic to retrieve. I use the probe to determine exactly where the coin is, Then I make a slit in the ground with my digger/knife, partially pry up the dirt with my digger, use the probe to locate the coin and remove it. The dirt and grass is easily and cleanly tamped back into place.

These issues are about my only complaints about using the X-70 vs my Explorer II with the Sunray probe (good for about 3" detection).

I don't think it's a fault of Minelab really. The X-Terra coils have a chip in them that tells the machine what coil is attached. In order for there to be a probe made, they would have to have the same chip in them to match the currently attached coil. Also, to change coils, you have to turn off the machine and let it go through it's start up to set itself to the current coil. Basically, you would have to turn the detector off, flip the probe switch, then turn the detector back on to use the probe. Sunray has made a fantastic product with their inline probes, but the X-terra series is a totally new monster with using different frequency coils. I would also wonder how much would it cost to buy an inline X-terra probe that has the added chip and technology? Cost vs convenience might not make it worth having.

I hadn't entered into this discussion as sometimes it is better to sit on the sidelines and simply "moderate". But I believe Richie hit the nail on the head with his response. It is easy to blame the manufacturer of the "host" item for not allowing a third party to build accessories for it. But when you consider the probes and coils that are currently being manufactured for SunRay for use on Minelabs, there has to be more to it than Minelab simply not wanting it to happen. I think many of those reasons are just as Richie mentioned. SunRay markets good products. And I use several of them myself. But I can't see the people who build Ralph's inline probes taking on the technological challenges offered by the single frequency (times 3) X-Terra any more than I can see Minelab giving access to their unique VFLEX design. At least not any time soon. JMHO HH Randy
 
Could also be the reason minelab doesnt want to give up the info, to keep them the sole makers of the coils........
and Im sure hoping they are developing a nice 12" or larger coil for the Xterra, DD in design, a nice beach coil:cheers:

I guess I didn't recall your earlier post as to why you were not going to become involved in the X-Terra accessory coil / probe production. Apparently one of those reasons is NOT that you weren't willing. Glad to see you have (had) an interest. Now you have me thinking! Out of curiosity, how could an inline probe be compatible with a single frequency detector, operating at either 3 kHz, 7.5 kHz or 18.75 kHz? Not all three at once. Only one at a time. I understand a "wide band" application that might be acceptible to all three frequencies simultaneously. (similar to White's MXT and DFX at 3 kHz, 14kHz and 15kHz). But not just one at a time, in one single "accessory". I suppose the probe could communicate with the control unit via one of three separate "chips", one dedicated to each frequency. And each frequency could be "dialed in" via a control switch. And then have a toggle to switch back and forth between the probe and the X-Terra. But wouldn't it also require different winding specs for each of the three different frequencies? Any information you could add would be appreciated. HH Randy

Had Minelab followed through with their original promise (from their CEO in Australia) to license us and sell us the required chip we would simply have chosen one of the three for our probe (more than likely the lower frequency for coins, relics, etc). - not all three.

and if you ever get back to "negotiations" for the X-Terra accessories.........based on the fact that the only model capable of using the 3 kHz coil is the X-Terra 70, AND that most Prospectors and beach hunters like the X-Terra 70 for gold, I'd probably opt for the higher 18.75 kHz (on a probe) if I were asked. I always wondered why Minelab made the three X-Terra models with the frequencies they chose. I like the variety of the 3 kHz, 7.5 kHz and 18.75 kHz frequencies. But I think they could have sold more detectors if they would have assigned the frequencies differently. I would have made the X-30 at 7.5 kHz, just like they did. However, I would have made the X-Terra 50 capable of using both the 7.5 and the 3 kHz coils. Perfect detector for coin shooters as both frequencies are hot on silver and copper. Then, I would have made the X-70 the one to have all three freqs. With Iron Mask Prospecting mode, Beach mode, Auto Tracking and multiple tones, it would have made more sense to me to make the X-70 the only one capable of operating at 18.75 kHz. Just makes sense to me. Thanks again for the response. HH Randy
