I've been sick and busy, a bad combo for detecting time, especially when paired with the early darkness! I snuck in a few short hunts recently, but yesterday was the first time I got out for a decent amount of time.
One hunt I got just a few targets, wheats and memorials and one 1941-D dime. I didn't even take the finds out of the car. I was surprised a few days later when I was sorting them out to find a 1901 Indian head cent among them.
Another hunt was tough but I was interested to find a early 60's Coke screw cap (pretty sad when you can get excited about a screw cap!) But an early 60s cap means there were people there with silver in their pockets. I also found the old 50s Ford key. The weird find was the worn and filed down Mercury dime. It's a 19-- and has been shaped on the edges and the one side has been filed off. Perhaps a love token in the making?
Day three netted a plated and bent 1968-D penny and a 1911 wheatie along with some clad and a small sterling silver kids ring.
Day four was a longer hunt but not super productive. Mostly all clad with a few wheats until I hit a sweet 51 cent pocket spill with a 1920 wheat, dateless SLQ and a nice 1934 quarter. I was really surprised to find those in the hunted out area I was pounding!
Yesterday was full of surprises. I hunted an area of a park I had written off before, and picked up wheats, moved to another area adjacent and more clad (lots of dimes) and a whipped 1942 Mercury dime popped out. Kept at that area and was surprised again with a pretty nice 1920 Mercury dime.
After finds dropped off there was another small section and I told myself I'd check it out and try to get 10 coins out of that area. Turned out to be a good goal. The first target was a clad quarter and then two clad dimes, then a penny, and 1962D dime
another penny, then a 1953 aluminum 10 Groschen from Austria (my second 10 groschen this year), followed by a 1917 Mercury dime. A few more clad rounded out 12 coins from this small area.
I then decided that I had enough time to get 10 more coins, so I moved to another spot and got to work. Memorials and a few clad dimes, then a few wheats and a pocket spill of two Mercury dimes in one hole... 1941-S and 1944-S ( must have been a Californian sitting there!) Kept at it, getting clad and wheats, batteries died and had to switch out, but then I ran out of time, only 8 coins from this area, but with two silver I was happy.
