More gold from yard and silver to boot

I posted a message on October 20 from a yard I had permission to hunt and found a 1943 class ring and a silver bracelet plus some silver.

I decided to go back last night for about 2 hours since weather is nice and snow on the horizon. I wanted to go back to this yard to see if I missed anything. Boy did I miss some things  I concentrated on the side yard since did mostly front yard before.

My first find was a small heart shaped jewelry piece. I was thinking it would sure be nice to find some gold again. Well the very next reading was a low sound; since found gold before here I dug in. Well I be darned if I did see gold in the hole :surprised: I unearthed a 1945 Mercyhurst College ring from Erie Penna :clapping:

I went a little further in the side yard and had a large signal. It was interesting that it was not a solid one tone signal but a few different sounds. It was over a square foot area so I decided to try dig and see if maybe a pocket spill. First thing found when opened the hole was a wheat penny. Put probe in the hole and it just went wild. Continued to dig in and up came more and more coins :surprised: After about 10 wheats a Mercury showed up. Then a few more pennies and then a silver nickel; 1944P. Then more pennies. Moved over a few inches and out came more wheats and then another Mercury. Then more and more pennies. This spill produced 40 wheat pennies, the 2 Mercs, and the silver nickel.

Total finds in the yard was the 2 Mercs plus 44 wheat pennies; 1916 1918 1918s 1919 1927 1930d 1938(3) 1941 1944(7) 1944d 1945 1946(3) 1948(2) 1949 1950(4) 1950d 1951d 1952d 1953 1954d 1954s 1956(2) 1956d(6) 1958d. 3 Memorials and another nickel, 1952d.

I had to leave before I finished the whole yard so I plan on returning again!!

Here are some pics:

That's a mighty big coin spill - was there any sign of leather or cloth around it? And that ring - wow! Gotta love old yards...

I did not see any evidence of a container of any kind. It was kind of close to a clothesline, but not under it. Being found couple rings and other jewelry was wondering if maybe thjey played volleyball in the yard in the 1940's. This is a major college town and was probably was lived in by students back then.

In my neck of the woods in that era kids were given wheat pennies to play with in old yards and old yards are loaded with them...Looks like some kid stashed his loot plus a couple silver dimes.
As far as the gold ring...excelent find and would go back as should be a silver or two left...

Very nice finds there and a very nice ring. Wouldn't we all like to have a couple of old yards like that to play in. HH on your trip back there. You are going back aren't you?

Nice finds! In 12+ years of detecting I have never found a class ring and you find two in two weeks! Way to go. That was a big pocket spill. Sounds like someone dropped a roll of pennies. HH

Man thats AWESOME! That ring looks like 18k gold!
That yard needs a good poundin!
WTG!!!:clapping:

That is a stellar looking class ring and it certainly has that extra golden 18k look about it somebody above mentioned. (might just be the photo)

Good luck on future visits.

Great Find. I have notg been using the SE for a long time and am doing well finding silver, but have not found any gold?
So does gold sound low on the SE? and where does it read on the smart screen?

I am using the Explorer II. Seems like it is near the nickel range on the Explorer II. I have been digging most signals now which are at the Nickel area of the Smart Screen and at even below the nickel. Below the nickel a lot of the times it is a big clump of foil; but there have been some goodies. I take the stance to dig all signals on the right of my Iron Mask setting; which is usually -10 while I hunt yards. In parks I may not dig all those low sounds; but if want gold you should. I have been hunting yards mostly here.
