More Probe Q's

This is how the fights start on this particular forum. I believe he said that a probe without TID is worthless IN THAT SITUATION and not that probes are worthless. He is not saying that pinpointers or probes without TID are worthless!!! Re-read his statement please everyone.

I have a Bullseye 1, a Bullseye 2, Garrets Pro Pointer, 2 Automax Precision v4's, the Pistol Probe (4 inches depth my patooty:heh:), and an underwater attached to head phones, I think Detector Pro makes, that I use with my Excalibur I paid like 4 or 500 for, and let me tell you: dancing in breakers with two sets of head phones, the Excalibur, and the scoop is a bit too much on the work side if you ask me. I have used all of these pinpointers and would not trade ALL, for just one of my Sun Rays...flat out. AND yes, any pinpointer that doesn't have Target ID is as worthless as a dictionary with words that are not alphabetized. It doesn't really do the trick and it would and does flat out amaze me that any one would prefer any pinpointer that didn't ID your target. I thought I explained it quite simply, maybe something got lost in the translation....such is life:shrug: The magic words were TARGET ID Greek:////:....worthless with out and I assume, since I posted it one would think I meant worthless to me
I don't mean to come off as anyone using something different is wrong, I don't care what you use, I don't sell any type of metal detecting equipment. I am just giving my honest, experienced with what: 7 different probes: opinion, and yes, I feel very strong about that opinion, because I spent close to 3 grand obtaining it, and if someone had whispered the words "Sun Ray Probe" in my ear prior, I would be 2 grand ahead. Add to that the targets missed and damaged....oh yeah, I just might have a pretty strong opinion. I am sorry if yours is different...but that's mine, and I am sticking to it.:detecting: Sorry if the word "worthless" offended, but honestly, all these pinpointers I have in my garage are pinpointing the shelf they are sitting on and are utterly worthless, wasteful and collecting dust in comparison to the tools that make me time and money, the Sun Ray Probes, the rest are worthless to me. I will eventually sell them on Ebay, but now that creates more crap for me to do that I neither enjoy or desire doing....hey, maybe I'll get lucky and there will be a bizarre rush on ID-less pinpointers, like what's happening with the GPX gold detectors, and I'll make back my money, but I kind of doubt it.

In YOUR opinion that is! No doubt the Sunray is probably the best probe, minus the added weight, but to say the others are worthless because you spent a gazillion dollars on them is..... Oh nevermind!!! Your right honey!!! I understand!!!!

That works on the wife, sometimes....

Never understood the weight complaint either:confused:...the probe switch is on the shaft and it is lighter than the probe itself which is on the battery compartment, since the fulcrum is the hand grip...that math says the coil end is now lighter and less fatiguing to swing:nerd:.....funny that a Mine Lab user is concerned with weight:rofl:

Reconsider the above statement.

To imply that adding weight as long as it is properly distributed will reduce fatigue is inaccurate.

Any added weight adds more resistance to the shoulder.

That is why the swingy thingy has become such a popular accessory with us older guys.

If you're a young fellow in good shape, the added weight probably wont make much difference.

I've got tendonitis in my right arm & elbow from swinging my detector so much. It has the probe attached also. When I bought the 15x12 sef butterfly coil, I bought the Swingy Thingy too because my arm was already screaming in pain after every hunt. That thing made my detector feel nice and light. I think weight is primarily an issue for us older guys. I'm telling you, things begin to change when you hit the 40's. My arm is recovering because Minelab has had my detector since October 2nd and I don't have a backup detector. Their slow service is healing me. heh-heh But I want to get back out there and hunt!

If you break down the forces...

Without the swing thing: Shoulder is supporting the weight of detector as well as the torque produced by holding this weight at a horizontal distance away from your shoulder (torque = force x lever-length, or weight of the detector x distance to detector's center of gravity). So, your shoulder is holding the weight of the detector and providing a counter-torque to hold the detector up.

With the swing thingy: Both the forces acting on the shoulder are reduced by having the most of the weight and torque transferred to the swing thing harness. There is now another force required, however. Because the bungee, in effect, pulls the detector towards you, your shoulder now has to provide a counter acting force by pushing the detector away from you. Instead of holding it up, you are holding it out. My shoulder has gotten pretty sore without the swing thing, and with it.

I have found that if I am using a big coil, or my shoulder hurts, then I shorten the shaft up so that the coil is right in front of my feet. By reducing the horizontal distance you remove a lot of the torque and the bungee is pulling more in the vertical than the horizontal which reduces the necessary counter force to a large degree.
