Multi-Barber day! 1916-S Merc...or is it?

Howdy,

Thursday I went back to the site I've continued to hunt and tried my luck once again to see what it had in store for me. I managed to locate another little productive spot and just went slowly. Got a cuff link first, then an Indian Head cent. Couple Wheats, and then struck silver with a real sharp Barber dime. I was definitely going to be gridding this section now. Few more Wheats, then got a nice chirpy signal, but it wasn't exactly a sure winner sound - had some chop to it. But I went after the target anyway. When I flipped the dirt, I thought I saw a flash of a white disc, but then I saw a piece of aluminum slaw. Bummer. But after clearing that out, I still got a good signal, and now it was screaming. Found that there was indeed a white disc in there, and it was a Barber quarter. Whew, glad I went after that target!

Then got a sharp looking Merc and the remaining Wheats. Found what I thought was going to be a silver ring, but then saw it was just an adjustable and aluminum. Might have some age though. Last target was a thin, worn silver dime, which I thought was going to be another Barber.

Rinsed everything off at home, and the last dime I thought was going to be a Barber turned out to be a Merc. But wait! I saw the date was 1916. Flipped it over and could see it had a mint mark. Uh-oh - could this be the one? Got the magnifier out on this one because it was so worn, and can really only make out the top of the mintmark. Seems rounded to me, so I declare it an S mint (despite staring at it and willing it to turn into a D). Rats!

All in all, a very enjoyable hunt. That brings me to 122 old coins from this site; 86 Wheats, 14 Indians, 22 silver.

Thanks for looking.

I'd still go have someone else check out the 1916, just to make sure. It looks like the S mark on your other merc is shaped different.

Nice finds. I would make sure that s isn't a D...lol.

Congratulations on the multi-barber day DF. :clapping:
I think I am having better luck turning that
mintmark on your 1916 dime into a D mark
than you did. I agree with Dave-IL....I think I
would have it checked also..... great hunt!
