I just a new MXT Pro with the 950 coil, been waiting along time to get this machine, Ive used it for a few hours everyday for the last five days and I cant seem to get coins to hold any kind of ID #ers.
I read alot of people saying nickels hit 18/20 but all the ones I have dug have been jumpy numbers and there not deep, maybe 3" or so, dimes and quaters do the same thing, jumpy numbers.
Im using the c/j mode and the factory marked settings and Ive checked every hole after for other targets that might be throwing the numbers off but nothing there?
Has anyone else run into this problem? Im not new to the hobby Ive been at it for 20 years and have had alot of detectors.

Turn your gain down to about 7-8 and see what happens. Congrats on the new machine. You're really going to love it. HH, Nancy

does the numbers keep jumping even when you air test targets?

That does not sound normal for the mxt. If adjusting the gain lower as Nancy suggested does not help then it could be a bad coil but sometimes the detector needs re-calibrated too. Just have to go through the process of elimination to figure out what the problem is. See if you can find another coil that you could use and if that doesn't help then you know the coil is probably fine.
Also, make sure you are using good Alkaline batteries. I've had issues with the cheap "heavy duty" batteries making my MXT Pro really erratic.

reconnect- check batteries, lower gain, swap coils, check it in all modes. -- you've been around a while. eliminate the obvious. coins generally stay close on numbers with the mxt series e tracker, and friends dfx. pennies of various conditions and composition come up different. a halo effect occasionally. but i think Aaron might be right if not the the forementioned things. it sound like shielding on the coil. and to heck with garbage batteries. i have had good use with dollar store alkalines but the non alkies just dont work and drain right. i bet is the coil. whites has great service!!!!!! TOPS!!!!!

Ive only had the mxt for a week, the batteries came with it from whites and still reads 11 on the battery test so I dont think thats the problem, Ive been hunting two old soft ball fields with very few targets but there are some coins and some trash but not much, for me its a good place to learn and test any new detector I buy.
The air test work ok, not as stable as my Omega on the air test, gold rings on a air test gives jumpy numbers but I dont put much in an air test, never have never will because the ground changes everything no matter how well a machine does on an air test, but I get what your saying, use the air test to check the coil or maybe an internal problem.
Hate send a detector back thats only a week old, dosent say much for the MXT so far, but Im not done testing it yet and I have a D2 coming on Friday so I will see how that works out before I get to pissed off.

if on air test the MXT acts smooth and locks targets, then the problem shouldn't be with the machine. Maybe EMI, ground minerals, small sized trash, sensitivity too high
