My Best and Oldest Find!

Was hunting a park in S.E. Iowa over the weekend and got a signal at 9 inches that I was sure was an Indian Head but to my pleasant surprise, out pops this 1853 Half Dime with arrows. No mint mark so it was minted in Philadelphia but it looks to be in great shape.
Thanks
Chuck

My oldest coin is just like that . It is an 1853 half dime. It was only about 2" down. Nice find... KEN

Very nice find. I'll bet it was only in circulation a couple months (or less) before it was lost, for 160 years.

Nice. It is in outstanding condition at least VF if not EF condition.

What machine do you have and what was the numbers, if applicable? Great looking coin!!!
I used the minelab CTX 3030. Open screen except for ferrous line 22 and below discriminated out. It rang in at 12-36-38, not typical silver numbers on the CTX!. In fact, I was sure it was an Indian head.

What a great find. Congrats.

The only half dime I ever found was also an 1853, but mine wasn't in as nice condition as yours. Congrats on the find, Chuck!

Bee utiful !!! :clapping:

Thanks,
Actually, I originally thought the same but since I referred to the CTX 3030 TID chart! I noticed that half dimes do come in at 12-37.

Very nice detail on the half dime! That one could not have been in circulation for very long. My CTX is on a truck for delivery today......I hope I can do as well with mine!!!

Good luck with your new CTX! I'm sure you will find the good stuff in no time. I would suggest using the least amount of discrimination that you can. Also, IMHO, less sensitivity is best at least in my case. With straight auto (A), I can easily go down to 12 inches. To much sens will give you a lot of falsing etc. I now use Gonehuntings pattern with combined audio exclusively.
Happy Hunting
Chuck
