My Bob story :D

Well-known member
Years ago I used to get a few divers from work and we would all go up to Boyne City Michigan for a weekend of diving and just raising hell.

One of the guys going was Bob. He was a new diver and I had dove with him several times. He should never have been in the water because he was just plane afraid of the water. I have no clue why he took up the hobby but I suspect I was part of the cause. We were friends and I had talked about it quite a bit. I remember diving with him, well sorta diving with him and he did not get deeper than five ft deep. He could blame it on his equiptment but I knew better. I had been diving for years and that fella was just scared. That is ok because it is not for everybody but a person like that should just face it and not dive.

I think there were about eight of us going up that year. We would all stay in the same Motel and share rooms. It was pretty cheap. Not as cheap as Bob though!

He said he was going to take his camper and stay at the state park. He said he was not going to sleep in any flea bitten Motel. The motel was a nice place and very clean but he was tight. His camper was a pig pen and much worse than any motel I had ever been in.

We would get up in the morning and all have breakfast together and plan our day. His attitude sorta ticked me off and I told him what time we were going to meet and where and I also told him that I was not going to go out to the park and wake him up so he had better take an alarm,

Well Bob drove up alone and on the way he got a rock thrown through his windshield. He got up there and was ticked. The hole was on the drivers side and he had wind blowing in his face all the way up. We all laughed.

When we got up, no Bob. We went to the Resturant and no Bob. We ate and no Bob. We left the resturant and Bob showed up wantin g us to wait for him to eat. We told him where we were going diving and left. He had not brought an alarm. "I don't need a dang alarm" right.

We get out to the lake and all pair up, Bob didn't eat. He had a Hookah for some reasom. I have no idea why he bought it. He started it up and left the hose wrapped on it and melted the airhose on the exhaust, before even getting in the water.

Someone loaned him a tank and he used that. I came up during the dive, we were near shore, to see where I was. There was Bob setting on shore. I asked him what the problem was and he said he had lost his weight belt. I had a spare so came out of the water and got it for him.

I went back to my dive and when I came back up, there was Bob, setting on shore. I asked what the problem was and he said my weight belt was no good. The buckle was junk and he had lost it. I got pizzed and told him he did not know what the hell he was doing and ought to take up knitting. I had used that weight belt for eight years and it had never come off. I went down and found it.

Bob went home early, because of equiptment problems and when he drove in his driveway his dog ran out to greet him and Bob ran over him. Killed the dog too. He drove home with that busted windshield too!!

Oh yes, he blew a tire on the way up too. I have not seen him in years

I think it is sad because he just wanted to be part of the group.

We faced the same problem with horses. Some friend would ask me to teach their son how to ride. Once in a while, while trying to teach the child to ride, it would become apparent that the child was scare of horses...some of them never over came the fear and I would have to tell the parents very tactfully that the child just wasn't meant to be riding a horse. Folks do not realize that a horse can kill someone in a split second...they are large animals with a mind of their own.

Royal, thanks for posting this story. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

for the life of me, I can not remember what it was. We teased him about it for a long time. He retired a long time ago and moved to Mo

he was one of the best auto mecanics I ever knew. But he was cheap and sorta odd.

When he got into diving he knew I had a hookah so he wanted one. He asked what I had and he checked them out and decided to get one about half the price. There was reason it was half the price, it was junk. Heck, I had to talk him out of buying one of those old Johnston air supplys they sold back in the early days. But it is a good deal Royal. Yeah right.

He took his truck because he didn't want to spend the 10 or 15 bucks a night per head that it cost us. He would prefer to camp for two bucks a night in that ancient pickup camper. He also didn't like the idea of eating in resturants because of the price of the food. Cheaper to cook his own. This was suppose to be a weekend of friends getting together to have fun and there he was alone out at Young State Park to save a few bucks.

He ended up with a busted windshield, lost weight belt, melted hookah hose, shortened trip and a dead dog.

He was nuts in some ways. Just before he retired, maybe a year, he bought a bran new Ford 4x4. He drove it home and put it up on blocks, took all the tires off and sprayed it completely with used crank case oil. He bitched about the salt on the roads in Michigan and said that he was not gonna let it rust out his truck. It sat there for years, not be being driven but there sure was no rust. Does this make sense in any way? The depreciation in two or three years was quite a bit and I know he had not driven it by the time he retired. Crazy stuff. He also bought a Dry Suit for diving, 900 bucks! before retiring and I asked him what for and he said he wanted to do dock repairs and such. They better be shallow docks!

We'd go for breakfast once or twice a week after work and I'd pay four or five times in a row.....and then I'd wait him out the fifth time and he'd go up and only pay for his own. And he wouldn't leave a tip !!...Never understood that type.....and I don't want to either.

I think we all had a "Bob" around at one time or another and some of us had/have more than one. My current "Bob" is Dan J. Dan works at at the same place I do, True Temper, and is a nice guy, but he fits the description you gave of Bob as you wrote about him to a T. :).
