Hi everyone!

I'm new to metal detecting and just purchased an Ace 250. Is there any advice regarding this machine that you feel would be helpful for me to know? Until now, most of my research has centered around the Silver uMax, but the deal on the Ace was really too good to pass up, so now I'm one of you. :)

I'm looking forward to joining in on all the fun...both in the field and on this forum!

Congrats on the Ace. That was a good deal. I saw where you got it. The Ace is a great little machine. Suggest you put it in jewelry mode, set the sensitivity at 4 bars and Have Fun. I have had mine about 3 weeks now and am still getting used to it. I think you made a good buy. Take care.

Hey TN Girl,

The ACE 250 is a good little machine, do some experimenting with it in the garden, do some historical research on your area and have some FUN!
Taking my ACE 250 up to New Hampshire tomorrow to see the grandchildren and a weekend of detecting old homes and farms.

Welcome TN girl The ACE 250 is a great turn on and go machine! My advice is put some coins down on your lawn and see how the machine acts. You shouldn't see any bouncing ie going from dime to quarter etc. A quarter is a quarter and a dime is a dime and a nickel is a nickel. etc. When you start digging you will see some bouncing those are iffy targets. I dug everything for the first 2 months. Granted I dug ALOT of trash but I also paid attn. and learned my machine! Now I am not saying to not dig iffy targets, last week I found my largest pocket spill. There were several different coins in the same hole and so the machine was bouncing all over. That's what's great about this hobby you just never know. Patience is the key. You will dig a lot of trash to start but as you learn your machine you will dig less and less. There are also several good videos on you tube about pinpointing and how to dig a plug. Last thing in the beginning you may have some issues with digging a hole and not finding anything because your pinpointing is off. Don't get fustrated it takes time! If you have the money the first thing I will tell you to get is the Garrett pro pointer It has helped me tremendiously. Trust me when I say it's worth it's weight in gold! WHEW sorry that's a lot of info but just remember your next find could be your best find! You just never know what lies under your feet!! Good luck!! :detecting:

Welcome to the forum.

Hunt in coin mode not all metal at first. Sensitivity at four bars. Dig good repetable signals and you'll learn quickly.
When you can afford it the snipper coil will be a good investment for trashy area.
The Garrett Pro Pointer will speed up your finds in the deeper holes.
When you dig make sure there's no trace that you were in that spot .
Uncle Willy uses a screwdriver to pop out the coins.Check out past treads on this technique.
Good luck and post your finds when you can.

Welcome aboard to the best forum on the net. Just go through the archives as they are loaded with info on the 250. Two quick tips - hunt in coin mode only until you are familiar with the machine ( many hours ). Set your sensitivity at four bars and leave it there. Pinpointing requires the most practice.

Welcome, Post pics of your finds whenever possible, we all like looking at each others finds. good, bad or otherwise.

Relax, have fun and take your time. What lies beneath isn't going anywhere until you dig it up.

last yr was my first yr with the 250 and pro pointer...i had to sell a couple months back but this weekend i get a brand new spankin pointer and a 250! when i started i thought i wasnt doin it right or the machine was broke cause it would be all quiet. what i would do is say switch from jewerly ...cause no beeps...to all metal ! then u would hear all the low tones (usually junk) ...so then i knew i was doin it right ...and was really supprised how it filtered out pull tabs and foil. what i got used to in the end was the tones ... i know the screen would say quarter ...but after a bit i just listed to the tones ..the higher the better !also proper diggin tools for ur area are a must ..if iam in the bush i dont really care about plugs ...and will dig like a mad man ! parks ...well be like special forces..in that its best that no one knew u were there. have fun, get a large container for ur finds..it starts to pile up. post some pics of ur loot!

My daughter likes her ace! They done great first time out, 4 Rings in one park, two gold, one silver wedding band, and a class ring! And a gold watch, one silver necklace, buffalo nickel and a merc dime! Have fun and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for all the input. I cannot wait to get out there and get started! I hope to have my detector by next weekend. In the meantime, I figure I'll check out the instruction manual online and familiarize myself with the Ace as much as possible. I also want to get in as much read-time on this forum as possible. Sounds like I have a busy week ahead!

Many of you suggest setting the sensitivity on 4. Can you tell me why that is? And are you saying to always leave it there or just while I'm learning to use the machine?

I leave mine at 4 all the time! The only time I have heard anybody say to move it is if you are at the beach. If you set it lower you will miss stuff. If you go higher than 5 or 6 you will get false signals! Have fun and like unk willy said the more you dig the better you will get. Also one more suggestion. Try and find a metal detecting club in your area. They can help you learn your machine and you will have access to unlimited knowledge. Good luck:detecting:

TnGirl. There area lot of videos on You Tube showing how to operate the Ace 250. Garrett has there insrtuctional CD there as well.

Garthbfan (and any others who want to chime in) :)

When you say that some folks adjust the sensitivity only at the beach, are you talking salt water only? I'll be going to SC soon and would like to know how best to adjust the settings.

Also, are Garrett's coils waterproof? I plan to use it at my local lake, too.

Welcome. The only thing we ask is that you post photos of your finds. We all like looking at what other detectorists are finding.

If you get near the water or even in shallow water you can use a securely fastened lanyard attached to your 250 and hung around your neck to keep it safe. The Ace 250 is plenty light enough where it won't hurt your neck just don't bend down too far and get the control box near the water.

I recommend starting in jewelry mode and staying there. You can notch out any items you are not fond of digging. Be careful not to notch out gold, though. Gold shows up all over the place. Air test some of your own jewelry to see where. The Ace will detect plenty deep even at lower sensitivity. Try to set it so you get no falsing. 4-6 is a good range to begin. Here is a link to the greatest tool you'll need for pinpointing:

It's from resident expert khouse and it made me a better hunter after only one view. I still watch it once in a while.

Sorry I can't tell you more about beach settings I just remember seeing it in a post somewhere. I am going to a hunt tomorrow with the folks from my club I will ask them about beach settings for you!!

G'day TN girl.
You have a great first detector in the Ace. It actually will do very well in most situations, not to mention, give you a lot of target information.
The pinpointing clip that Chris put in his post by Khouse covers the main elements of how we can pinpoint with the Ace and there are a number of variations of how we can apply that information. As I like to get more information out of my pinpoint, I usually slide the coil towards myself and listen to how long it takes for the pinpoint single to disappear. Coins and rings behave the same and you will find that the signal will fade fairly quickly (as do all targets that are within 2in of the coil). If you have a signal that seems to hang on for ages, then you have a coke can or bigger. If you have trouble locating a deeper target, then when you release and re hit the pinpoint button (as per video) then you can push the coil away from yourself as well. The signal will drop off in the cut out in the middle of the coil. Practice in your back yard. Practicing at home on both good and bad targets will show you how the Ace is trying to tell you what is going on.
At the beach, on dry sand, you can run your sensitivity up to 7 bars. If you are getting a lot of erratic signals, then back it off a bit. Wet sand is a much tougher environment, but the Ace will handle it. I've found the most stable setting is to notch out the bottom 3 notches and reduce your sensitivity to 5 bars. As with a lot of detectors, the Ace doesn't like waves crashing over the coil. It gets very erratic when this is happening. The coil is waterproof, the control box is anything but.
Good luck and have fun.

Garrett coils are very sensitive and moreso on the 250. If you run much above four you'll get lots of false signals. If you're in a real clean area with no junk and low or no mineralization you can run it higher but if it gets erratic crank it back down. Just remember, the sensitivity is NOT a depth control much as a lot of hype suggests.
