The Indian and I got out for probably our last hunt at an old fairground for this year. We have been real fortunate with the finds . Lots of wheat's Indians and large cents( four I think) and old silver. Today I found my first three cent piece. It had a vid in the low thirty's so I was real surprised to see silver .It has been holed on the date so I will never Know but I don't really care, It has a new home now. Also found a weird 1887 seated dime. It is real tarnished like maybe through a layer of silver. I don't think that's possible so am wondering if it is a counterfeit. Here are some pics . goldbill

Congratulations on the three center and the others as well. I have never heard of counterfeit dimes, but I suppose they are out there. I don't think you would hurt it any by taking a wire brush to it and see if the rust comes off or the silver.......

That dime could be a contemporary counterfeit. There are several things that you can do to see what it is.
Weigh it and see how it compares to a pre-1964 dime. (There is a slight weight difference w/dimes 1874 and earlier, but not much.)
Run a magnet over it. (Some have some iron content.)
Put a jewelers loop to it and see if the color "under" is still silver.
Does it have a flex to it? (Many contemporary counterfeits had a high lead/tin content.)
Larry is right on not worrying too much on hurting that. The best way to do it (If it is real only.) is to use a "pommeling" motion, so it doesn't look like long scratches. I wouldn't carry it too far though. If it is fake...put it in a 2x2 and enjoy it as a piece of history.
I can't get a good look at the edge to see if there is reeding....many counterfeiters didn't worry much about good edge detail and that coin looks in good enough condition to have retained some of it, if real. Hope this helps.

nice find, only found one in all my years of detecting but was not really a coin hunter. I found mine in a Union Civil War Camp

Thanks again everyone Earthsurfmaster I've got to tell you I have watched your vid( on start up in a new area) at least a dozen times and it has really helped a lot. That and Robs post ( I printed that and take it out into the field) Everyone here really make a difference for us sorta new guys. I think I jinks myself when I told Larry that we find large cents here often.. I didn't get one all summer!! This fall though two.. Goldbill

No worries, I read your post, thought it was sincere and didn't notice I was a earthsurfmaster! Which is kind of funny as I used to be (still consider myself to be actually) a surfer. Nice memories. ;-)
I actually need to watch my video again as I collected a lot of that info and presented it and I think I have grown a bit comfy with the V. I have to start my testing and playing around with it again - burying coins and testing before EVERY hunt!

Goldbill, I found a 1873 counterfit seated dime this summer in a woods. 95% of the silver plating was pealed off the front side and 75% was pealed off the back side when I found it. The base metal is almost a black color and the coin is a lot thinner than a real seated dime, not magnetic. Had a good year year for seated dimes, found 5 plus the counterfit and two silver 3 cent pieces, both 1853.
