My horseshoe depth scale air test method

I went to Home Depot & picked up a piece of styrofoam 1" x 2' x4' & cut it into 8 pieces 12"x12", & removed the reflective film as I was suspicious about it causing issues.
This makes it simple to place coins between whichever layer u choose & chech the audio and ID in inches & compare the result on the horseshoe.
I was surprised as I walked through the programs of the effect at 7 & 8 inches. Some programs not as good as others but they each have their niche.
The main reason I came up with this method was to experiment with the multi TID screen so I could figure out the orientation of targets as they relatd to coil position. I also wanted to share what a lot of u know about multiple targets of each other, i. E. Coin spills brings down the TID. In the picture of coins here are, top left a qtr. between two nickles, the top right a dime below a cent & bottom center a game token, no cash value.
The reading for the qtr between nickles was 79/80, which I'm sure a lot of folks would walk away from thinking zincoin. The penny over the dime reads 85 and the token reads 84/85 same as a bus token which is worth $2.25 here.

Yes it is. I find the Golden dollars often here in the quarter range 93/94. I usually find 2-3 a week. For not being in limited circulation they are everwhere. I found 6 last week. Tolal for the year so far is 82. I have 28 bus tokens and once in a while if I find one while checking out a bus stop I will give it to the person waiting for the bus. Glad u like my idea, it mames it easy to check single or multiple targets, just don't do it on a windy day. LOL

I stay away from VDI listen to the tones. Also as for depth. I use the audio response set at 3. Loud signals are shallow and deep are soft signals.

Thanks for the tip. I have read your postings as well as the other XP experts that post regularily. I really like the Deus system mainly for the light weight. I find the tones a little harsh since I suffer hearing loss and have tinnitus most of my 73 years. Occuptional hazards I suppose from working in Bowling alleys. Many years as a jet engine mechanic and 20 years around injection molding machines. I have detected since the 1990's and had a lot of successes also. Mostly I hunt parks now and even though some are old, I struggle with hearing the whispers everyone talks about. Almost laughable that I think I hear what is described and dig, & dig some more and come up with a beaver tail or rusty screw/bolt/nail. I have yet to find deep silver with my Deus. That I trust these ears to believe that no VDI and a tiny bit of audio can find a worthy target. Had my Deus since April this year and so far found Two gold rings, 1 gold plated bracelet, 2 large gold ear rings, 1 gold locket, 1 silver bracelet and over 500.00 in clad plus a dozen silver rings. To me at my age I have been successful. Success comes in many forms. The Deus keeps me from getting the sitting disease, that's what I love about it most. Still learning.
My friend who has an Etrac says it took him 4 years to learn. He recently found a Morgan at twelve inches next to a porch that 2 other guys missed. So it seems to take experience with good equiptment and skills to use it & most important the goodie is under the coil if u hear it.
I also have Andy's book. I hope I have many years to swing the stick and like everyone on the forum anxiously await the coming update & coil.

I totally agree with you,the tones are far more reliable than the VDI,anything over 8'' and the screen is very un-relaible at giving info,but the headphones will always provide the real acurate info at greater depths.I cannot recall the last time i used my controller,it sits in my bag in the truck and basically is used just to make the odd fine adjustment.

The audio wont let you down on the Deus,but the screen could do,as with any machine with a screen they do provide some additional info i personally would never totally rly on just the screen as you can and will miss targets.

you did not show VDI, or tones heard...just finds; how does this help OP(and the rest of us), please?

Thanks for noticing that. I watched the video twice cause I thought I missed it the first time. I would have loved to hear the secret tone others hear that I can't seem too. I also hunt by tones, I use VDI also, they can be used together or as one chooses. Some are more gifted and a step above others in the finds area because of it. Some hear a cat purring, some call it the round sound, some the sweet sound. Some say a slamming sound.
In the video I heard the pinpointer fine. What I did not hear was the sound of finding the target. I would like to find that tone I can here that means I have a decent target at max depth of the 9" coil. So far what I perceive as it, turns out to be junk. Only had the Deus for 6mos. I'll get there.

Tones are just one tool to determine possible target ID. Personally I don't have the extra time to dig a lot of iffy's based on tone alone. I make my time count by using as many forms of input (VDI/Tone/Depth) as possible. I've dug many good tones that had bad VDI that were crap, and I've dug many good VDI numbers that sounded like crap that were crap, and I've dug a few that sounded good and the VDI was good but were crap. But a lot less crap when all my input (VDI/Tone/Depth) all are good.

I didn't get the tone on film. It was at reactivity at 4 u could here every nail then a pop of goodness when I wiggled away from the target it got scratchy. I usually don't dig it but it sounded to good to pass up

Thanks for the follow up with the setting. I don't make many changes my self but when I find a little faint signal check for the depth and will walk around it while checking the reactivity to ferret out more of the target etc. I like basic one and always set silencer to -1 and reacttivity to 3. To me it makes a big difference. I find lots of nickels. I have averaged 70 a month the past few months. Most are 3-4 " deep. I tried Squirrel1's suggestion in one of his posts of digging a hole and placing a dime into the side at different depths and was not able to pick it up at 6" from gnd level. I'm thinking since this is a used unit and after a few hours hunting coil charge diminishes to 50 percent. It may be affecting the depth. I don't know the age of my Deus but it had V2.0 when I bought it, and i have updated to 3.2. Signal strength surely affects depth. Which makes me think this could be a factor with the 11x13 coil not getting much greater depth than the 9" coil. Thats asking a lot out of a 3.7 V battery! Althoug it gets more coverage by design. I do find a lot of the coins I dig are not as deep as the horseshoe indicates. That's why I decided to use the foam sheets so I could place coins of different denominations at different levels and practice the sounds and see the numbers. Thinking about sendind the coil out for a battery change, but weather has been so good I just can't give it up right now. Thank u all for your comments. My silver coin slump will end eventually as I learn more.

I agree, I found you get more depth with a audio response around 3. A setting of 5 sounds like a good idea to be able to hear deeper targets but it's not. With a setting of 5 thoes barely there signals wont come through.

You are spot on with your setup and should be able to tweak your machine to
get the best quality tones on deep and not so deep targets just don't be afraid of tweaking
those settings as they impact the quality of the tones significantly even small changes!

and be sure to adjust the audio tones to a frequency that you can easily hear with your
hearing loss...find one that sings out for you and use it for the "choice" target zone.

The increase to audio response is also good as it only increases volume for the quieter targets but it
can change the smoothness considerably.... changing frequencies in the same program also changes the target
response quality and smoothness a lot... I built a test garden and was blown away by the impact
that even the smallest changes could have on the quality of the tones

all this can be tested and developed with your setup!
More people should take the time to do this... would be a lot less questions
