Ahhhhh!!!
This week, detecting really felt like it was for me back in '07; Lots and lots of old coinage in the turf!! I was able to get out to the turf 4 times since last Thursday. Out of those 4 hunts, 3 were from the same park; a park I had found a total of around 50 or so silver coins in numerous hunts in '07 through '08. I never guessed I'd find 24 more silver from this park, especially in just three hunts. 
On Monday and Tuesday, I managed back to back 10 Silver days, something I don't think I ever did before. My oldest coin from this park was a 1914 S barber dime, which was completely masked. I never would have found the coin if I wasn't digging all the shallow zinc pennies from a very productive area around an old oak tree. This was one time that I didn't mind removing the bottle caps and clad from an area that produced a total of 12 silver coins from two hunts there. On the second hunt underneath this tree, I put on my 6x8 coil, and only managed 2 more silver, and about 4 more wheats, so the 11" Pro Coil did a pretty good job on the first hunt in this area. Since I began detecting again in July, I've managed to find 114 silver coins, along with about 25 pieces of silver jewelry. This is way beyond my expectations, especially since I have been mainly detecting parks that have been pillaged heavily over the years, and before July, I was too weak to detect because of a fibromyalgia flareup, which lasted over 10 months. The only park I detected for the first time this year, which looks like it will produce more, was a park I dug 6 silver and 38 wheats from last Thursday.
On my 4th hunt of the week, yesterday morning, I noticed a man and woman staring at me from their car as I was recovering a target underneath the old oak tree. They got out of their car, the man was dressed with a white shirt and tie, and approached me, while the lady was about 10 ft behind him with her hands on her hips and a confused look on her face. The man said, "Excuse me....What are you doing?" I was surprised he didn't know exactly what I was doing.
I told him that I was metal detecting, and that I came here to find old coins and relics, and that I have been very successful in the past two days here. He then introduced himself as a city park official, and said that he was concerned that if I was using my lesche digger in the turf, that it would create a hole, and make it hazardous for patrons of the park. I told him not to worry....and I assured him that no holes were being made in the park...I told him that I have been detecting parks in S. Cal for over 20 years, and that I had the recovery technique down to a science. I remove lots of trash from the park, and showed him a silver coin. He was amazed that I was finding old coins at this park. He said have a good day, and walked back into his car, probably headed to work at the City Hall.
I probably won't have another week like this for the rest of the year, but it sure was a lot of fun. Sometimes, you never know when a park that you detected hard in the past will just surprise the hell out of you if you go back and give it another try.
