My New Mission

Hello all, I haven't been posting my finds as of late, but I have been lurking around the site. I was thinkng of doing something a little different. ( for me). I have access to an old farm approx 50 acres. It dates back to the 1650's. I have detected there before (with DFX) and did not find much of anything. I finnally got back there and did a little with my E-Trac. I found a small buckle, but the rain and sandfleas sent me packing before I did much.
So this is my deal.....I think I will "blog" about my finds etc. good, bad, whatever. More of an online diary. There has to be something somewhere on this property. I am going to make it my mission to search every square inch. I am hoping for the # 1 on my wish list.......A Tree shilling of some type.

I will keep you all posted. Dan

I was thinking about doing the same, but at the end of the day I barely have enough energy to clean my finds, let alone blog about it. My hat goes off to you.

Best of luck!

Sounds like a good plan and I'll be looking forward to reading your blogs. I am sure you will find something cool. I've heard those Mass. "tree" coins sound like foil/pull tab, similar to the sound of the English hammered coins so you may to dig almost all non-iron signals for awhile. Good luck & happy hunting!

Yeah! Really hope you are able to make some good finds. Please do put some pictures here if you would though. Would appreciate that and good luck!

1600's Farm Day 2

Was able to get out after work. The sun was out and things were looking good. I got there and got my stuff together and went over to look at the coyote. There is a coyote that is hanging around in one of the fields. she doesn't seem to mind me being there. She just sits on her butt looking at me like I am weird. Some times she will get up and move away a little, then lay down and go to sleep. We think she has a den near by. while I was watching her the owner of the house drove up and I waived. He came over and we talked for a bit. He was trying to give me as much info that he could about the property. He was telling me about the house. the the first part was built in the 1640's and then a few small additions later. I asked about the landscaping and he said except for the pool area everything is just the way it was (for close to the past 400 years). He was telling me where the first barn was. (it burned down in the 50's, and where the foundation to the second barn was( built in the 50's, it also burned down. There are the remnants of two other small barns, and a cottage that used to be on the property.
I spent alot of time talking with the owner. I had all the coins that I found in the early spring with me, and he wanted to see them. I also showed him my M-4 which I had with me. I brought it to work to show my boss and his partner. My boss is also a former Jar-Head. The owner grabed his camera, he wanted to take a picture of the M-4 and the coins to send to his brother in Wisconsin. His brother also detects and would be interested in my finds....if any. I asked if his brother had ever detected the place and he said no. He has lived there for 43 years, and no one has detected it in that time.
So......The detecting... this place has got me stymied a little. The good signals are very few and far between. There are some low # targets, but so far just a little can slaw. what you see in the pic is what I have found so far. The dateless buff is the oldest coin. I was happy to pull the big button, I like finding those. ther was some horse tac, but there just doesn't seem to be the normal stuff you find at old sites like this. The amount of buttons, and those little period nic-nacs I typically find. I am using my pro coil, was thinking of going to my 6X8 SEF, but I am not getting too much nulling a few iron chirps here and there.
I not sure if I am going to find much on this property, but there is only one way to find out. I am trying to get my camera situation sorted out, and i will post some pics of the property. maybe I can take some video of the coyote. she lets us get to about 50 yards from her.

Dan the finds will be there! That's a lot of history on that spot. I know one thing from experience...when you get around the areas that had fires, the signals can/will get strange! I had a buff that was a strange signal and I dug it on a whim, kinda expecting those old "pre-40's" bottle caps because the ferrous was reading like 24. It turned out to be a buff. So keep an eye on that sens. if your running in auto. When it starts to drop I'd almost dig anything that gave a 2-way hit. Good luck...sounds like a nice place to hunt with nice people letting you!

Neb Trac, thanks for the advice and the encouragement. it is funny that you said that about the buff...The Jeferson nick was a 12/13 the buff was 18/23 and bouncy. I plan on, and usually do dig anything that has a repeatable signal. I will dig down into the foil #'s. In an old spots like this you never know.
Token Digger, thanks for the heads-up on the tree shilling #'s I was thinking they would be somewhere around a 1 reale, but wasn't sure. I'm thinking that my chanches are 1 in 1000, that I will find one.

I slept in a little this morn, but will be headed over therefor a few hrs.......I just thought of something...I should keep track of how many hrs in total I detect this spot.

That's a great start. That's a nice big button and the buckle on the upper left looks like it isn't horse tack but maybe an old belt buckle? Have you seen anything on the surface like bits of brick, glass, pottery, etc.? The place was probably plowed for 300+ years so the stuff may be at any depth. I know you'll find some good stuff. Don't get too close to that coyote's den and don't forget the sunscreen. HH

Here are some pics of the property. it is very typical of an old New England homestead.

1600's farm day three 3hrs
went back to the farm and this is what I found. Two wheats 1939 Jeff Nick and a little clad. I found a horse bridle too, but didn't get a pic. there really isn't a whole lot of junk. bits of small iron mostly. It was hot and humid and the ground is moist in places, and dry in others. I used 6X8 SEF the whole time. I couldn't tell if this was a better choice or not. I may throw on the 12X15 SEF and see if the added depth helps. I am starting to think all the old stuff is deep. I don't think the fields have been plowed in a very long time. It was a dairy farm during the 1900's. The Coyote was not there today. I was told she only hangs out there in the afternoon on sunny days.

Hi all. I went out Tue after work and put on my 12X15 SEF. I thought maybe if I was able to go a little deeper I might be able to scrape something up. I wasn't getting too much falsing, so the 12X15 wasn't a bad choice. I did find a couple of things, but no old coins. I found a small bell down a measured 12.5 inches. I think it is made of brass, and the bell part is around the size of a half dollar. I also found a buckle down around 7-8 inches that still had the iron prong in it. other than that, just a few shallow clad coins. I just find it odd that there is very little in the way of older coins. I'm not talking about 16-1700's stuff, I'm talking about early 1900's.....the odd merc or two. In the big open fields I am going at a medium pace and slow down every now and then. In the grassy areas around the house I am going real slow and go back and forth over the same ground more than once. I can go here anytime I want, so I guess I will continue to do so. I think I will try one of my other spots just to get my mojo back.
Have you ever been detecting, when you felt like you could do no wrong. You felt like your detector had special powers, you were the best detectorist in the world, and all others were chumps. In this spot, I keep checking to see if I put my battery in. Oh well, it keeps it interesting.

Dan

I admire your persistence, especially in this warm weather. Sounds like there is A LOT of time between signals. That bell sounds cool - is it round like a sleigh bell? Have you noticed any pattern to where you found stuff or is it just scattered all over? Anything near where an outhouse may have stood? I have never hunted a house this old but recently did one from the late 1700s. We found one large cent near the house but a lot of older stuff was on a hillside next to the house leading down to a pasture. It almost looked like the occupants would just toss stuff off their side porch onto this hillside. I'm sure you'll find something old soon and the mojo will be back. Thanks for keeping us updated on your exploits and HH.
