Thought I'd try out an old school house where I've found some silver and relics at in the past. About half way through the hunt my audio drops to a level where it sounds super compressed almost like its coming out of a cheap AM radio. I've had this happen once or twice before, but then it comes back after a while. I saw the battery was quite low so I went back to the car and put another pack in. When I turned it on it was working OK again. Long story short it happened again about an hour later so I packed it in. I came home and tried by passing the X-1, tried new headphones, tried a new coil to try to isoate, but it seems like its the control unit.

Anyone else have this issue where the audio sounds super compressed? I'm wondering if one of the contacts on the headphone jack is not working.....any ideas? Or do you think it's defective audio hardware on one of the boards? Guess I'll have to send it back to LV for repairs. This is my first Minelab machine that has broken. :thumbdown: To make matters worse, all I found were a handfull of wheats and an old broken Timex watch - it was very difficult to hunt with the audio like that!
 
Seriously though I may get one to pit against my E-Trac - I like some of the things they have done with the software and will probably study it before I come up with my own next generation interface - man there's soooo much that can be done. Now, if I could only find some time to go out detecting! :biggrin:

Hi TMAC! Thanks for your post - I do have the E-Trac which I have not really used because I usually only get an hour here and an hour there to hunt. I figure I need a good half a day or more to get used to the new machine. I guess I'll be getting to know it REAL soon.

No, I tried that....unplugging them several times.....I read somewhere that you should not ever leave them plugged in when the machine is off, but just learned that recently......maybe I have a faulty headphone jack that's picking up 2 of the 3 conductors?
 
it might be something in the headphone jack...or something related in that way like you're thinking.

My older pair of Sunray pro golds have started doing that at times. First I hear static...then it shorts out...then about 1/2 the sound disappears for a few minutes.

I am not a technical feller'... but you might be having a similar problem. I'll hope for the best...but in the meantime...at least you have an E-trac to use.:thumbup:

Thanks Bryce....that's what it sounds like -- about a 1/2 drop in the audio and it sounds super compressed like a cheap AM radio. I just noticed this the last couple of hunts, but it would always come back to normal except today....looks like I may have to become friends with my E-Trac! :biggrin: Well I hope it's just the headphone jack -- remember to unplug your headphones when the unit is off. Thanks for the warning Eric I was unaware that leaving the headphone jack plugged in would cause problems . I've left them plugged in quite a few times , now I know !!:thumbup:

try a hard reset, ie pull out the battery while its switched on, wait a minute and plug it in again and restart it. Ive think they are a bit like computers, need a reboot now and again
 
i always have my trusty old DFX in the van...just in case!

i would call a Minelab tech on Monday and ship it off...they will probably treat you as well as they treated me, and if they don't, we'd all like to hear about it.

I always leave my headphones plugged in all the time. Thanks for the advice. What problem does it cause?

I hope it is nothing major but like you said you will become friends with the E-trac fast
I hate to hear of anybody having problems because I know how frustrating it is.
 
My main headset was the rattlers,it only covers one ear so u have the other ear free to hear outside sounds.I have always liked this setup esp in the woods.They started doing the samething on my se.the sound would get static then it would compress or get really low like i could only hear half of the sound.If i wigled the cord around the headphone itself i could get it to comeback sometimes,or it would just start working on its own.I had to stop using them.Sounds like you have a jack prob on the detector itself.is that something hard to change i wonder or you may need to send it in.Time to bust out the E-trac anyways!!Thats alot of horsepower to be sitting while its baby brother gets all the use :)Good luck i hope you get it figured out.

Hi Barry,

I thought I saw a comment from Minelab to someone else that had a problem with their headphone jack that the constant contact of the potentially different types of metal over an extended period of time can cause corrosion, but maybe someone here can confirm that.

I, myself, think it's just good measure - my own opinion is that the springy mechanism for holding the jack in will probably be weakened if the jack is always in place...(similar to the elastic in a pair of socks)....this is just a guess on my part - like I said I used to leave mine plugged in most of the time, but I will be removing my headphones from the unit from now on.
 
hi there,have the same problem myself with the se,it the connection bit where the earplug goes in,does it make the machine cackle then cut out,could be mud in the access point,mine's only done it half a dozen time's,works perfectly now though,could be moisture from the mud.accumilation of thing's,it the only way that it can reach the inner sanctome.your in the right place to have it repaired,if its still in warranty!.or you got insurance.
