Hi guys, I went out today for about 3.5 hours at this park where they have the farmers market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It was pretty fun, I encountered an old timer that was using a Fisher metal detector. He told me that people should not cut plugs on the grass because that will kill the grass. That he had been kicked out of parks because of what other people do. He told me not to do it. He said he had been doing this for the last 20 years. He pulled two baggies of rings and what not. He's like I sold sooooooooooo many of these for money and for beer. He showed me everything he found today!!! Pull out a hand full of coins and what about you? I took out about the same amount too. :detecting:
I almost asked how he gets old coins out of the floor if he doesn't cut plugs but I didn't want to make him mad. :starwars:
I noticed that he didn't have any trash either, he doesn't collect the trash like us to make the place cleaner. Weird!! I thought him been the pro would have a better way of doing his metal detecting. He showed me a screwdriver grinded into a spike, when I asked him. Don't you scratch your coins with this? He just looked at me and said, yeah. I do it all the time. Ouch!!!::rant:veryangry:
He went his way and I went mine to continue my destructive ways of plug making. J/k No more plugs unless I know there will be old coins in that park or What do you guys think? I make them super neat that you wont notice where I made it but does it really kill the grass? Can you guys tell me if you've seen dead patches of grass because of this?
I found quite a bit of clad. Some more deteriorated coins and my second foreign coin. A Two Euro coin that I really liked. Pretty shiny and big. I hope to get some opinions from you guys. Thanks!

Try digging a flap. It is almost like a plug but the grass seems to do better with it. Shallow coins you can get out with a slit or just prying them out of the ground. If the ground is moist, digging a plug won't hurt too bad either. I go back to the spots I've hunted and usually after a day it is impossible to tell I've been through the area.

Nice Euro coin.

Chris

Nice, that Euro is worth about $3.

I agree with cwilk go the flap route, I have a brass Garrett probe for coin hunting, it isn't supposed to scratch the coins, but I would rather not make contact with the coin AT ALL so I don't use it. What if you are digging a bunch of clad hap hazardly, and then run into something GOOD? You just lowered the value considerably by scratching it. I also don't know how much advice I would take from someone that doesn't have enough sense to realize he will be digging the same JUNK next week... HH Joe

The flap that Cwilk talks about is a three sided grass soil lump .
Flip it over on the uncut part .If you use a pin pointer check the flap and the hole for your target.
Once you've taken the article out of the hole just flip the flap back on the hole and gently pat it down with your foot.
You want to be able to tell you never dug their if you do it right.
Reason is if you separate the soil from the grass the roots and grass will die and you'll have a yellow(brown) spot of dead grass.

:clapping:Thank for your replies guys!!!
