nails & coins

What an incredible machine! I'm still pretty new to the Etrac and am still learning and reading posts in the forum. I've read a lot about how good this machine is at spotting coins mixed in with trash. Got a couple of personal examples today. I got a 12-47 reading mixed in with a lot of other readings that were all over the place; had some trouble getting the machine to pinpoint the object which was supposed to be about 3" deep by the depth meter. I dug where I thought it was, found nothing and almost gave up. Went back over the spot and still got the same reading, pinpointed again and got a location about 2" from the original hole and dug up about a half dozen small nails all rusted together pointing in the same direction. After removing the nails, I scanned back over the area and still got a strong and steady 12-47 reading and now didn't have any trouble pinpointing the object. Dug it up and it was a clad quarter. Another find also gave me readings all over the place but with FE/CO readings 10-40, 12-41 etc. I dug up the object and thought at first it was a copper button with a rusty iron eye attached. It was the same size as a penny. Cleaned it up when I got home and it was a 1944D wheat penny with an iron nail driven through the center of it. Only about 1/8" of the nail remained and is the diameter of a finishing nail. Its amazing to me what the Etrac can do -- it knew the coins were there and I just had to trust what it was telling me.

it is amazing and your story proves it once again so the lesson for newbies is once you have recovered the nails ect always run the etrac over the hole again as it is very rarely wrong WHOOOOPEE

So even when the nails are driven right into the coins the ETrac can still find them. That's a great story.:clapping:

Guess I need to save up for a digital camera so I can share photos of finds like the wheatie with the nail. Found out later today that the area where I was hunting was 1940 era houses that were torn down about 15 years ago. Also found a 1962 Memorial cent in this same area. One 1944 Wheat Cent + one 1962 Memorial Cent = silver coins. I think I know where I'll be spending some time once the temps cool down and we get some rain. It was 104 today when I quit hunting, but at least I was in the shade of the only two trees in this area; the rest is bare as can be.
