Need a new detector

Doug Lenik

New member
After driving three hours to get to the beach I take out the excal 2 and walk to my favorite spot. When I turn the machine on, guess what?
I have three Minelab Excaliburs and have had trouble with all of them now. Each has been back for service, The 800 twice and needs to go
back again. These machines work great when they work. I am very careful with my machines and keep them in their carry cases and even bubblewrap the control housing. I clean them after every use. Does anyone else have this many problems with Excals? What is the best alternative machine?
Thanks for any imput. Doug

what is wrong with it ..i had to fix my power cable on my xcal 2 and i'm like u verry carefull not to twist the cables to much ..but there was a crack in the wire just inside the part where u put it on to the battery pad but i fix it my self

Hey Doug, I know the Beach's you hunt and the Excalibur is by far the best , The second would have to be the CZ21 or 20 which at one time ruled OC, VB, and the Jersey Shores. I know of two hunters that live & hunt Oc year round with the CZ's and do very well. I have a few water detectors that if you want to try before you buy, let me know....CZ20, DF, Ls...........Good Luck..see ya on the beach...............joe

Thanks for all the reply's. The Excal 800 goes out in todays mail. After closer inspection I found water inside the control housing which is what
it was repaired for last year. The excal 2 has a problem holding a stable threshold. The threshold volume changes after it crosses a target. After
crossing a non-ferrous target the threshold volume disappears and I have to turn the threshold up to hear it again. When I pass an Iron target and the machine nulls, the threshold returns so loud that I have to turn it back down. I can't afford a new detector right now but I am considering the fisher, maybe in the spring.
Minelab said the turn around time on Excaliburs is about 45 days. Thanks and happy hunting. Doug

I had the same problem Tomcat, i have only hat mine since June, they have been given some serious faulty wire because everyone seems to have the same problem. My husband repaired mine twice, the second time he cut some wire out and rejoined it,now it's a bit shorter i like it and no probs up to now.

Cheers Maureen..

I have been thinking of bagging an older Sovereign myself. since I already have the rod and coils I think I am looking at around 275.00. Something to do!

I'm sure that they are supposed to do that. That's just the way they're made. When I got my Excal 2 I posted about this and everyone confirmed it.

Sounds like it is working fine. The machine will null on iron and come back with a different tone that will change everytime the coil goes across a ferrous target. Sweep your scoop close to your coil and the threshold will return to normal. Set the Disc. at 0 or 1 and sens. at 1 o'clock volume as loud as you can stand it threshold barely audible make sure the battery is fully charged and hunt. May have to adjust the sensitivity a little according to where you are hunting. You will have less problems in the water because tabs and bobbie pins don't last as long in salt water. You have very good machines just take time to learn the sounds. Good luck. HH:minelab:
