I got my new E-Trac in the other day...and today is the first real chance I've had to mess with it. I buried a coin garden out back to do some testing. It's not going well at all. I put all the coins at 5-6 inches deep....so they aren't exceptionally deep. I can not get the E-Trac to hit on the merc dime. I'm in the stock coin program, Auto +3 and can not get a hit on it. Nor will it hit on the Buffalo nickel. I'm pretty disappointed right now. Any ideas?

Does it air test on coins ok?

Possibly something in the dirt other than the coins?

Bad EMI??
 
Not sure how it can be bad EMI...i used the noise cancel. My ACE350 hits the coins just fine. Air testing isn't great....maybe only 4-5 inches. Could i have gotten a bad unit?
 
Turn your E-Trac off. Turn it back on holding the power button down until you see FACTORY RESET on the screen. Do not make any adjustments to the machine. Turn the machine on and do a noise cancel. Hopefully that should get you started. Check your headphones to make sure they are working. If you get no response try your QUICK MASK button. If that does'nt help take it back to your dealer or call Minelab Customer Care at 888-949-6522. Don't panic you have one of the best detectors out there. Keep us posted. HH :minelab:
 
Set your GROUND setting to DIFFICULT for North American soil and set your TRASH setting to HIGH for the see-through capability it's in the E-Trac manual and Andy's book. Now go try again in your coin garden. Ground is set to NORMAL for plowed fields and sandy soil like beaches according to Andy's book.
 
Tried all of the advice above and still no dice. I'm going to take off my Sun Ray Probe and see if that is it...if not, I'm afraid I got a bad unit. :( either way something will have to be sent back.
 
Dan, I just tested 2 of them with same air test results. Dime only hits solidly around 5-6 inches. Quarter 6-7. silver dollar around 8-9. I have personally dug MANY targets way past this mark in the ground with these same machines. E-tracs don't air test or do well at all with freshly planted targets. I would try hunting with it in an area that is semi clean and with long buried targets and see what it does.

I suspect its ok. Try watering your test garden and trying the next day. Dry ground will hurt depth also. Let us know your results!
 
took off my probe and still no improvement. Tried an air test again with probe off and can barely get 6inches with a dime. Something is off here......not the way I was envisioning this happening.
 
My ground is soaked with water....not dry at all. No reason I shouldn't be able to pick up a silver dime @ 6 inches.....i was envisioning being able to pull it at almost twice that depth....especially in these good conditions. I ran it in all metal as well and not a single dime blip on the monitor.
 
Running in straight auto after a noise cancel, what does the right hand column sensitivity number indicate? If a low number, you prob have hot soil. I can hit a quarter much deeper by simply running manual as opposed to auto.
 
How old is your test garden? coins develop a halo around them from being underground for many years. A freshly planted coin won't be anywhere near as readable as a true old coin.
 
Silver dimes have not the same halo as a copper coin will have. I'm with Raymo on this one and think a possible connector or maybe even a bad coil. Coils are tricky and people really take them for granted. And I have said in the past not every electronic device is the same. You can take 2 identical ipods and one will have slightly higher volume then the next and 2 identical cameras and one will do slightly better than the other. Personally I have no problem picking up silver dimes at that depth and even greater. With straight factory settings. Minelab detectors do not like disturbed or really I should say fluffy soil. Atleast this is what I'm told, but have not tested this myself. Although I hunt plenty of fields right after they have been ploughed and have excellent results. Get your hands on a spare coil and try it out. Maybe your local dealer can help you with this or even another detectorist from your area using the pro coil. this problem has been reported before and i think it was a coil problem do hope you get it sorted as it is an awesome machine
