Need button ID

Can anybody tell me anything about this button I dug? The area has been a city park for 150+ years.

Thanks

Thats a very nice button, congrats on a cool find! It took a bit to find a match because a couple of the key features(sheild type, 'Excelsior below eagle, ect) on yours are still hidden underneith some corrosion. Now for the info your after...

You found an Indian War period New York Staff Officer's button. The style is a drooped wing eagle with Excelsior below the eagle. 1870's-1880's.
I lack any info for the back of the button, but so does the BUTTON for that matter, except for the design.
This is what it would have looked like 142 years ago....

Take my first comment with a grain of salt and continue reading this one....sorry. Noticable discrepancies found.

I should add a bit of info being more specific... This button has a self-shank back which was never issued in the US military so it is civilian use. It is a New York Militia Shield with New Yorks Moto "Excelsior". This Eagle design was used from late CW era to about 1902, After which the wings pointed upwards. The Self-Shank back was used from ABOUT 1900 onward. That leaves only a few years to place this button. ABOUT late 1800's to 1902.
Here is some SOURCE info.

Thanks a lot Aarong81 for your research.

I found the button on a prominent hillside in Milwaukee, WI where there is an excavation project underway. I can imagine that a visitor from New York around 1900 climbed the hill to see the city and then got his button ripped off rolling around with one of the more aggressive women that Milwaukee is known for. haha! I suppose it isn't worth much though especially in dug condition.
