I am currently using a V3i. I live two blocks from the beach so that is where most of my hunting is done. I would like to now invest in a MD just for the beach and underwater.

I have narrowed my choices down to a Whites surf master PI dual field. and the Fisher CZ 21.

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Go over to the beach with your V3I and hunt it in all metal mode. If you like the hunt then you will like the PI unit. There is no discrimination with the PI.

You fail to mention where you live. Some beaches like the ones in New Jersey are infested with iron. A PI unit is not a very effective way to hunt them.

Basically a PI unit is just for the water. The rule states that the further you get from the water the more trash you encounter. But if you are in a northern state water hunting is only a couple months. During the off season a PI will sit in the closet. Your V3I can handle the sand. Plus in the Mid Atlantic States water hunting is very hard to do even during low tide. So unless you are committed to getting in the water a PI unit is not your best bet. If you are serious about water hunting a PI can be awesome.

An Excal or CZ unit can go anywhere on the beach. They can hunt in the rain and take some waves where your V3I would be destroyed. These two detectors (the Excal and CZ) are very expensive. If you need discrimination and want a great water detector either will fit the bill.

I went with the Xcal over the CZ. I talked to NASA Tom and Clive. Both liked the CZ in fact Clive said it had advantages in some areas. The thing that raised my eye brow was when i was told Tom went into a well know detector place in Fl and tested 5 CZ21s and none tested the same. Thats not to mean they are bad units just inconsistent. Just goes to show not all machines are created equal and likely we wouldnt even know the difference. PIs are a little more reasonably priced with great depth.... but there is a learning curve with single tone so expect to be digging bobbie pins at better than a foot for awhile. I say if you can afford it and you are used to a disc machine got that away. Find some gold and then pay for that PI also. I use my Explorer on the beach .... but the salt is a silent killer on about anything. So clean your equipment especially that V.

Goodmore gave you some good advice. The Excallibur or CZ machines can be used on any beach in or out of the water. Get yourself a good scoop. HH :minelab:
