Need to get a grip on my scoop handle!

I have a nice wheel barrel wooden handle on my scoop that is preserved by a good coat of spar varnish. The problem is in the surf it gets really slick and I was wondering what would be the best way to get some grip on the handle. i was thinking something like wrapping the handle in a baseball bat type of tape. Is that a good idea? Is this tape available and would it hold up in the salt water surf. What say you veterans of the surf? Thanks, Marty

If the handle soaks up any water at all I needs to dry out. If not there is tape for handlebars that bicycle shops sell. Just an idea.

I never did it But test some undercoating spray on something Like a broom handle?? Just a thought??? Mickfin

you could always try something like rhino truck bed liner the wood would have to be dry in order for the stuff to adhere but it should work nicely. just an idea. Rocknut :)

What about the stuff (don't know what it's called) that you can buy at like Lowes that you dip tool handles in and it rubberizes them? Don't know if it works on wood or not.

Tool dip slippery not really good at coating coils either.Bed liner working good on coils .Might be a little harsh on the hands though.Maybe one of those handle helpers that bolt on?Good luck.Wayne

I have used that ruberized tape that tennis players wrap the handles
of their rackets with for several years now and it is holding up quite well
on my wood handle scoop....so far. Got it at Walley world in the sporting
goods section. Just another option. Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

I used the one Golden Nuggets use, the tennis racket handle rap, underwater and no problems. Used it on my excals handle........Something trick would be to have the handle turned down on a lathe to 1.5 inchs and get a grip like reileies uses, one of the orange handle grips

Thanks guys for all the great responses. I will check out the tape.
I have plenty of tennis players. HH

go to a bike store and get a pair of grips . heat one up .it will become easy to put over the grip.and get snugger when it cools off. should solve problem.

Somewhere i had a set of garden hand tools with green comfort foam on the handles similar to the grip on some detectors. Well i instantly knew where it would get better use. On my wooden handle coffee can scoop of coarse. Imho it works great and the price was right since i already had it lying around.
I'll dig it out and post a picture later.

It's a compactable rake from family dollar store with a twist lock neck. This one seems to be pretty grippy, you will have to put a little effort into installing this over your wooden handle since it will be a little larger but it shouldn't come off till you wear it off.
I have a stainless steel diamond head scoop that the handle slides off too, I may try this on that scoop also. If nothing else you will get some forearm exercise out of the slippery handle deal, I know i do. Good luck whatever you decide.

Never thought I would get some many excellent responses. Thank you. Marty
