New coin dept record for me

I hit a new personal dept record today with a 9" wheat measured, using the 17" coil.

Just wanted to see if anyone wants to chat about coin depths.

I just got my ctx in June this year and early on I was getting some 8" wheats. Then it got dry for the whole summer and the deepest coins I could get were 7.5 " silver dimes with iffy signals at best.

Now we rec3ntly got some good rain and my coins are jumping out of the ground at 8" . The 9" wheat I got today was a very weak signal and I almost ppassed on it. Wow how deep are the Indian heads I'm thinking. I have yet to find one.

I once found a ten inch deep medium sized coin. Most if not all machines can't get deeper than 10 inches on a coin of medium size.
the signal i got on the 10 inch deepcoin was very iffy but i dug any way, it's a strange feeling seeing a coin sat at the bottom of a 10 inch hole.
this was with an explorer se.

I dug a large cent about 11" and a few dimes at 10". The CTX cant go much deeper than that based on my experience and seeing field tested results.

I second Jim on that.... I am doubtful to believe I have hit deeper than that.

Exactly Mcfin, its like a new spot! Now I have to go back over all those areas that produced the 7.5" dimes and get the deeper ones.

Agg does it ever end with this ctx3030.

But wow the wet ground what a difference, now when I hit a 7.5" dime it sounds like it's at 4" where before it was getting pretty weak.

It's hard to describe what the 9" wheat sounded like, but one thing I noticed is the numbers stay consistently under there normal numbers. If I see numbers jumping up to 46 and 47 on a deep target it is always a nail and the screen will have the red cursor at bottom flash once and awhile. Now I know if I get any signal reading anything like a coin and no red cursor at bottom its very likely a coin.

I was wondering why this park had such deep coins that where not that old. For example a 1950 rosy at 7" and many mercs at 7.5. I did some research and found it was a'll farm field in the 30z so I think going from soft plowed field to a park the early drops sank quickly.

Here in NW Oregon with our rain soaked soil it makes me wonder how deep the old silver and Indian head pennies have sunk and if any detector can find the majority at those depths. Also I can't help but wonder if the ones others have found ( I've yet to find silver or IH coins after 6 months with an AT Pro) were ones that for some reason or another didn't sink as deep.

Now that I have a CTX 3030 I am confident some of those silver and IH coins are in my very near future!
Soil must be bad here though, I was hunting an old park yesterday with auto sensitivity +3 and the sensitivity panel showed a 7 in green!

My CTX is only a week old in my hands so I have a lot to learn! HH

The ground I was hunting was in the woods, very neutral and sandy. I have 40 years digging relics and this was my record. I have found a flat button over a foot with the 3030 in a pounded spot and can assure you in perfect soil the 3030 would get a large cent laying flat 16" as well. I know it sounds like a fish story but I filmed the bullet dig with my phone while digging and using a pinpointer. I posted it on YouTube I think under ctx 3030 digs a 16" bullet. I have only scratched the surface with this great detector. I know parks are trashy which masks deeper stuff but don't set a limit at 8 or 9" especially on quarters or larger coins. Also, go slow or you will miss the super deep stuff.

But, were you digging the signal just because it was there or was the CTX telling you that it was worthwhile to dig and you lucked out? Where you running full bore 30 sensitivity? I checked some of the video out but I didn't see you swing the coil over the target before it was dug (I might have missed it in the video) but it would have been nice to see that to hear what you did.

It is awesome if the CTX with the seventeen incher ( which is the only coil I have for some months now) can hit that deep, but, I think it is a fluke that it did. But I will keep an ear open for some signals that could be that deep, and report back..

The place I was hunting I have been too since 1970. If most people hunting in here with average machines you would be lucky to get anything. I tried an AT pro in here and got 3 bullets in 3 hours.

Hunted it one season with a V3i, averaged 12 bullets every 2 1/2 hours.

First time with the CTX got 17 bullets, next time got 21 in the same amount of time and that is after getting 200 or so bullets with other machines so not really a fair fight.

I hunt wide open screen and this day I could run wide open sensitivity so all conditions were perfect.

I dug one bullet close to this deep right before this one so the next one after I got down a ways said this could be another deep one, let me film it.

As anyone would guess, a 16" bullet is not going to jump out at you period but after 40 years of on and off relic hunting you listen for what I call a blip. Any change to make you stop and investigate.

I think I was in 35 FE this time, deep on, low trash so anything that chimes over the ferrous tone I stop to investigate. I really wish I could have filmed it from the beginning but that is a challenge with a phone in one hand and the detector in one hand trying to carry a landscape shovel.

Wish I had some kind of mounted camera but I don't. This year when I go back in there to hunt, I will try filming a deep one if I can tell from the start, may be kind of choppy but will give an idea.

Keep in mind, out of probably 4000 or so bullets this one and the one before are the deepest single ones I have ever dug using any kind of detector including a Nautilus DMC 2-B with a 15" coil.

I have dug 100's in the 14" range and 1000's over a foot since most of the places I detect have been pounded and that is all that is left is deep stuff.

I wanted to share the video to show what these detectors are capable of since no one would believe it if they did not see it. Too many people have fish stories when it comes to detector depth.

I think 10 inches on a dime is the most you will get on all FBS Minelab detectors.But on bullets and crusty coppers I think the HALO effect of the item trying to go "native" leaving a trail as it sinks gives you chance at detecting much deeper.
