New Detector....HELP! :)

Hello everyone....I am new to this site and from what I've read it seems pretty cool. I am in the market for a new machine and I am seeking help, info etc. I live in Washington State and hunt mostly parks and beaches (both salt and fresh water) but mostly fresh water. I have been looking that the Teknetics, Whites and Fisher F4 but have really been leaning to the Teknetics as they seem like great machines. I currently have a Bounty Hunter Land Star and am looking to upgrade. The Teknetics really interests me due to the ease of use, light weight and battery life. Please let me know your thoughts....my budget is 600.00 max.

Hey Josh,
I think your on the right track the teknetics line is very advanced I use the tek T2 and it a very impressive machine may be out of your price range though,
and although I have never used one but I think the tek omega might be one to consider like I said i don't own one but just by the post I see on here seems like a good machine and in your price range, I'm sure others will chime in who own one but thought I would put my 2cents in.

Talk to Bart at Big Boys Hobbies (top of page) I believe he can fix you up with either a G2/GB or an Omega 8000 in that price range. Either would be a great MD for general use and the G2 has the newest tech and great ability to see difficult targets. A 5 inch dd coil is a must for most hunting and the 11 inch is great for covering a lot of ground and getting a deeper signal. A lot depends on the kind of hunting you will do and how much experience you have. Call Bart to talk it over.

The O8 would be well in your price range.If coins are your main thing the O8 can not be beat it hits on coins harder then just about any machine in my opinion.It is also very light weight and only uses one 9 volt battery.The fisher f5 is close to the O8 but the O8 is a bit newer and improved and uses less batteries.
 
Just as a bit of knowledge...I bought a gb pro..Now I am using it for unting coins and doing quite well....
Sure..this is basically a gold nugget hunting machine and I could have picked a different unit....But I also hunt for nuggets in Ca in Aug when I get home and wanted to be able to use it there..
But It is doing a great job on cons...Now I could have taken the gb with the smaller coil to start but I did not expect the park I am hunting in NYC to be so junk infested... So far in 5 trip appox 10 hours I am still on my first battery and have recovered 261 coins 1 ring and numerous other bits of targets...
 
LowBoy is a forum member here, along with Mike Hillis. LowBoy has used about every Teknetics/Fisher unit. He also field tests these units for First Texas, who is the mfg for both detector lines of Teknetics & Fisher. Mike Hillis is the GURU on the Fisher F5, bar none and has multiple detector experience also. Then there is Monte who I think was detecting since the 1960's. He is an awesome source of knowledge. He has used about every detector known to mankind....lol:). I would get these three guys opinions before purchasing a unit. The T2, Omega, F5, G2 etc are all excellent units in their own right. The Garrett AT Pro (waterproof to 10 feet) is also considered excellent, but get a new one from the factory, as the first production units had problems which Garrett never admitted to. But the problem seems resolved with the newest production units. White's makes excellent units. Monte has alot of experience with White's units.
All 3 of these men hunt in high mineralization areas, Calif-New Mexico-Oregon/Wash/Idaho, like your state of Washington. Get their opinions before purchasing is my advice. They are all honest and have no personal agenda. Just tons of real world experience.
Some of these machines new will exceed 600.00, but if a unit really fits the bill for you, do consider spending a bit extra. In the short & long run it will be well worth it. Do buy a new unit so you have warranty protection. Or if a used one, make sure the warranty is transferrable e.g. White's detectors.
 
I have both the Omega and F5. The Omega is better balanced, ID's a little better than the F5 and maybe is a little lighter. The F5 is more user adjustable to different conditions, it is a little less expensive and IMHO has the best interface in the industry. Both nice mid priced detectors. I also just picked up a AT-Pro but have not used it enough to form much of an opinion yet. The AT-Pro may be a little less sensitive to EMI issues.
 
You've already gotten some good advice but since you're doing this within "a budget" figure, I'd recommend you consider the Gamma and use the $100 difference between it and the O8 to buy the 11" DD accessory coil. Other than the control design, the Gamma is VERY similar to the O8 in its feel and performance. The 11" DD really steps that up even more when used with any of the Frat Boys detectors. I consider it pretty important to have a concentric and a DD in order to handle different types of sites and I'm sure you will also once you gain some experience.

I had a BH Ranger Pro (stripped down Time Ranger) briefly and before reselling it, tested its recovery using a Nail Board Test that Monte Berry created using the stock coil. I had seen a Nail Board Test done with the Teknetics too - The Tek's seem to have better recovery than the Ranger Pro I tested. This is assuming all other things were equal (can be a big assumption). The BH's recovery seemed about equivalent to a Fisher F4 with stock coil that I tested. This does not mean one detector is better than the other, nor will find more treasure. For me for coin shooting, response and recovery is important. because I often choose trashy ground others skipped over rather than going deeper to cover the same ground others have with their MD's.
 
Reading this thread again I noticed no one mentioned that the 'frat brothers' detectors are coil compatible with the G2/GBPro detectors (both teknetics and Fisher models). I find that a real consideration. I have an Omega 8000 with 3 coils 2 of which are DDs that can be used when I can buy a G2.
