when the only one you need is coin mode but then every piece of non ferrous junk falls in there too..there seems to be a lot of screen where nothing reads at all,, its like going backwards in technology to me.. its disc pattern is just like every other machine out there..

I know some of you may think I am nitpicking, but i think it will be impossible to cherry pick in trash with this, except on coins bigger than quarters. which there arent too many anyway and easy enough to cherry pick with any machine at full disc.. at least on the explorer the only thing you had to worry about reading close to oddball coins were pulltabs and some shotgun shells and bullets... now its all in that same line.. even crown caps and now I suspect even tin can lids and the left over soldered rings from them are up there.. they can be awful in some sites too.. if they are in the 11-12 ferrous range they will be reading like many coins conductivewise as well as ferrous.

Today I am going to buy one.. never had so many reservations about buying a machine in my life... and for that much cash I must be nuts.. Oh well resale should be fairly good for a while If it dont work out.. right now I am thinking that the only real advantage over the explorer will be hunting completely pounded out sites with lots of iron but no other non ferrous targets to be found with todays machines, if it is indeed faster.. but from the videos I am thinking it will only see those that have 2 nails standing perfectly in parralel on each side of the target :) my sites are more like a coin in a pile of rusty nails and spikes
luckily (or unlucky I guess) I have quite a few of those sites.... and if it cant find anything there then you will be seeing it on the classifieds soon enough :) Hopefully somehow I am wrong and somehow you can pick the coins out of the tabs and trash...

seems to me they put a lot of bells and whistles and setting possibilities in it, yet none of them are any help.. two tone 4 tone etc etc.. 2 tone you would have a iron tone and one for everything else.. 4 tone I guess would be iron and a third of each type of trash and coin on the others.. not sure why they added all this stuff and not keep the old ferrous scale where they would actually come in handy

Jim I know our coinage is a lot different on this side of the pond, however I think that you will be surprised when you get your machine how well it can separate out the good targets on a trashy site, if your site is infested with nails then I should think that the FE 12 factor will not be a problem because this machine does not give false signals on nails like the Explorer and most other machines.

I was really surprised how smooth it runs and with the fast recovery time its a real pleasure to, yesterday I tried it on a test bed littered with nails and washers with six silver hammered coins including a Richard II quarter gold noble and a cut long cross penny, the machine was able to detect all six coins all though three sounded iffy, depth was not effected at all and the nails where just scattered placed neatly in line as shown on the video.

Then I tried my eight inch Explorer coil, wow this really plucked them out even when I put nails thee inches away or even on top of the coins, apart from the cut hammered that remained a very iffy but it did detect it and I would have dug it if out in the field, the most noticeable thing was how consistant the machine IDs targets regardless of the coil size being used.

As the above charts show:

When working a modern[/b] site I would be digging anything with a FE lower than16 and a CO higher than 20 I could disc out all iron, most foil and screw caps without losing any coins.
When working a farmers field for hammered coins and artefact's I would then just disc out iron and dig everything with a FE lower than 20 and a CO higher than 02 without loosing the good stuff.

If all US coins come in at FE 11 to 13 and with a CO above say 16 then why can't you disc out nails, foil and some screw caps and dig the rest? yes you will still have to dig pull tabs but that's the same everywhere on trashy sites. Our new coinage is so ferrous that you can pick up a new penny with a magnet and all the others will rust in a very short time apart from the pound and two pound coins so using disc on a car boot site will lose you coins, but who wants modern coins anyway.

not on your own anyway.....because realty is ......WE'RE ALL NUTS....and a pretty large bunch of ones as well ....

BUT at-least your not alone in your madness......no matter where in the world you reside.

There are people who have spent so much more in achieving so little less. I do believe THEY are the one's who are nuts and REALLY need to be worried about it.
Besides if all we are is a little nuts, then it's worth it and nothing wrong with having a little bit of fun with detecting with a detector or your choice.

This E-trac is a really interesting detector and it's separation qualities and detecting abilities are pretty good.

Take care

Thinking about it, I was out detecting in the rain last week when all normal people where at home or down the pub.

Conclusion: my name is Martin and I'm a detectorholic. :O

If all US coins come in at FE 11 to 13 and with a CO above say 16 then why can't you disc out nails, foil and some screw caps and dig the rest?

That makes sense. My SE gives the same ferrous ID on nickles and most pulltabs.. a 10 but the cco number on the tabs is usually slightly higher. I would guess that on the ETrac there would be even more of a difference in co. The thing for me will be how it handles bits of square nails and small bits of aluminum can. If it handles the pulltabs better than the SE and does the same on the bits and pieces, then it is still slightly better and with the increased speed much better.
The biggest question for me is will it "see through" hot rocks and iron and detect actually good targets that no other machine is capable of hitting. Some things I have seen seem to hint at this. If it will do that then it is worth every penny.
I am keeping me SE, at least for a while, I am not sure if the E Trac is a replacement for the EXP or if it is a complement to it. Time will tell...

Thanks for all you're help and encouragement. Some are very discouraging but I am buying one anyway. I think it is way too early to have any sort of definitive judgement on the E Trac. We need to learn it.
