New Etrac - 1st Time Out A Couple of Flat Buttons

dgc

New member
Got my new Etrac today and was able to hunt a pasture on our place that has produced a few good finds in the past. Only hunted a couple of hours. Ran a screen with everything below 30 Fe blacked out. Auto sensitivity +3 (it was showing 25). -Fast on, Deep off, high trash, difficult ground, normal multi tones-Dug a couple of deep holes chasing iron nail falses (Sunray pinpointer on order will help with the nail problem).

The large button was at a true 9". THe small one was about 5" deep. Don't know what the little sleeve is. The small piece of wire next to it came out of the sleeve.

Enjoy this forum. I'm sure I'll be posting some questions and maybe a few finds.

Thanks DGC. Congratulations on the finds and the pictures. Appreciated the story as well. Just out of curiosity what was your decision on where to set your discrimination, and what Tone I.D. were you using (Ferrous or Conduct.)? Keep on hunting, and enjoy the new machine!

I started out in all metal and increased the iron discrimination in increments until I found a point that was to my liking. I needed to disc out just enough of the iron signals so that I could focus on listening for good tones. The 30 Fe line seemed to do that for me. After reading the Sabish book, I believe I will black out the 01 line as well (except for the 41,42, and 43 CO blocks). This is supposed to help with iron falsing. I was using Conduct tones.

I was pretty impressed with the machine. I have hunted the small area I was in many times and would have sworn I had gotten every non-ferrous target that was there. FBS technology and the expanded Conductivity range on the Etrac really help with non-ferrous low conductors. The VIDs were much more stable and accurate than the other high end machine I have been using.

I wasn't able to cover much ground in the 2 hours I hunted. The clay soil here is very very hard now and digging requires carefully controlled hard jabs and pounds into the hole as you open it up. So to go down 9" or so and check dirt by the handful (no pinpointer yet) is a slow process. I am thinking about taking a hammer and chisel with me next time so I can be even more controlled while digging. There was a brick factory not far from where I was hunting. I can see why it was located here.
